The Lockerbie Lie

Terrorism: The administration says it was surprised and angry at the Lockerbie bomber's "compassionate" release. Now a letter reveals that it actually lobbied for it. Was this malicious intent or mere incompetence?

Last week, at a joint press conference with British Prime Minister David Cameron, President Obama was asked what he thought about a possible Senate investigation into the "Lockerbie bomber stuff" — namely that British Petroleum, among its other sins, lobbied the British government to release convicted Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi in order to win oil contracts from the Libyan government.

Obama replied: "I think all of us here in the United States were surprised, disappointed and angry about the release of the Lockerbie bomber, and my administration expressed very clearly our objections — prior to the decision being made and subsequent to the decision being made."

Yet according to the Australian newspaper, the Sunday Times of London has obtained correspondence showing that the administration was not in fact surprised and raised no strong objections. Rather, through the U.S. Embassy in London, it expressed to Scottish officials a preference for compassionate release over jail time in Libya. Obama's statement is simply not accurate.

Al-Megrahi, a Libyan intelligence officer and the head of security for Libyan Arab Airlines, was the only person convicted in the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, that killed 270 people, among them 189 Americans.

Al-Megrahi was sentenced to life in prison, but Scottish authorities, saying he had terminal cancer and would be dead in three months, chose to free him last August on humanitarian grounds. He is still alive, however, and news reports have questioned whether he was as sick as depicted.

If Obama were a conservative there’d be eight 24 hour news channels devoted entirely to his ineptness and lying.

No. The reporter is editorializing in reporting their 'reaction'. Their actual response was, they had OBJECTIONS before and after the release. That OBJECTION was that Obama wanted him released to Scotland.

One has to do a little reading 'between' the lines to understand politnewspeak.

AUGUST 5, 2009 : () Lockerbie victim families expressed anger yesterday [AUG 5] after the Scottish Justice Secretary made an unprecedented visit to the bomber in prison as speculation grew that he could be returned to Libya. Kenny MacAskill met with Abdel Basset Ali al-Megrahi, 57, at Greenock Prison, as part of ongoing deliberations about his future. It is thought to be the first time a senior Holyrood minister has visited a convicted killer in jail.
In May, Libyan authorities applied for al-Megrahi's repatriation under the terms of a controversial prisoner transfer deal agreed by Tripoli and the UK. That request was followed last week by a separate application for al-Megrahi's release on compassionate grounds. He is suffering from prostate cancer and his condition is now said to be terminal.
Mr MacAskill, who has the final say over whether al-Megrahi should be transferred or released, arrived in his ministerial car at 9am and left an hour later, making no comment. According to a spokeswoman for the Scottish Government he spent about half an hour with the Libyan. Al-Megrahi's lawyer Tony Kelly also took part in the visit but made no comment as he left the jail just after 10am.
The Justice Secretary has already spoken to the US Attorney General[Eric Holder*], British and American victims' families, and relatives of those who were killed on the ground in Lockerbie as part of his considerations.
------ "Lockerbie families' anger as bomber al-Megrahi gets ministerial visit," Charlene Sweeney , From The Times August 6, 2009 http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/scotland/article6739976.ece

* The Attny General is Eric Holder:

Holder was also intimately involved in President Clinton's August 11, 1999 pardon of 16 members of the FALN, acronym for the Armed Forces of National Liberation—a violent [marxist] terrorist organization (as designated by the FBI) that was active in the U.S. from the mid-1970s through the early 1980s.

Gee. It lied again.

Best solution: hang the Executive, Congress and the Judiciary. All of them. From whatever is available. The slow way. And leave their bodies (and stench) as a reminder to their successors.

But it won't happen. Americans aren't capable of looking past their toys (cars, boats, wide-screen TVs) anymore.

We've seen it all before, when greatness abases itself to ignominy. America is no different, there will be no uprising -- she will go out not with a bang but a whimper. If even that.

America -- a great idea, didn't last.

Ayatollah Obama’s letter stated that they were angry and disappointed at the terrorist’s release, but they would ‘prefer’ a release on compassion grounds rather than a prisoner swap. Does that even make sense to anybody?
