AUSTIN -- The state government's fiscal outlook worsened Tuesday as the chief budget writer... said a projected shortfall facing lawmakers is at least $18 billion.
Chairman Jim Pitts, R-Waxahachie, was considerably higher than previous projections and came on a day filled with mostly bad news as Pitts' committee looked toward the looming budget crunch.
Straus mentioned a number of possibilities to consider, including having unpaid furloughs for state employees, moving to a four-day workweek, freezing top-level state salaries and imposing a moratorium on proposed new programs that would add to the state's spending needs.
....lawmakers will examine revenue-raising options such as expanding gambling, increasing fees and eliminating some tax exemptions.
The state's gloomy budget picture is largely the result of tumbling state revenue because of the nation's economic downturn.
Lawmakers will also face demands to increase state school aid because of declining school property tax revenue at the local level.
..... "We cannot balance a budget with cuts alone."
....lawmakers should lift some of the tax exemptions and suggested an increase in the gasoline tax....
Having been here a long time, for some reason I have never heard of this paper before.

Yes it is! The Startlegram and the Dallas Morning News are both ultra liberal and will print anything that can even slightly be spun to taint Republicans and Conservatives.
