Kerry blames himself for flap over yacht tax
Saturday, July 31, 2010
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

BOSTON — Sen. John Kerry said he always intended to pay taxes in Massachusetts on his $7 million yacht but conceded he mishandled the public furor over his decision to dock the vessel in Rhode Island.

“I don’t think I dealt with it fast enough, effectively enough. There’s nobody to blame but myself for that,” the Massachusetts Democrat told The Boston Globe for Friday’s editions.

Kerry added that he did nothing legally wrong.

Kerry moved to end the controversy this week by saying he would write Massachusetts a check for about $500,000, whether he owed the money or not. He told The Associated Press that he and his wife “have always complied with tax laws.” The payment represents $437,500 in one-time sales taxes, plus about $70,000 in annual excise taxes.

The 2004 Democratic presidential nominee had been dogged by charges of tax evasion since the Boston Herald first reported his decision to dock the 76-foot sloop Isabel in Newport, R.I.

Kerry told the Globe it was never his intention to permanently dock the yacht in Rhode Island. He said he had not yet taken final ownership of the boat because changes were still being made by the designer, but that he could take possession within the next few days.

He said there was never any thought to avoiding sales and excise taxes in his home state, but acknowledged that he failed to get that message across to the public.

“I said to people, on day one, we will pay all taxes, all taxes, there’s no issue here,” he told the newspaper.

John Kerry served in Vietnam? I did not know that.

A John Kerry did if I recall, but my memory is a bit unreliable, around 04' it seems someone told me that a John Kerry did serve someone in Vietnam.

That would make Kerry liable for the sales tax.

Boats move around, they're kinda cool like that. Just appearing, or even being temporarily berthed on Nantucket (or elsewhere in Mass) wouldn't trigger the tax.

"Final ownership"? As opposed to the "non-final" kind?

“Kerry added that he did nothing legally wrong.”

Yeah, right. But he certainly wants “the rich” to pay their fair share, doesn’t he. (Except himself?)

IMHO

“Kerry added that he did nothing legally wrong.”

Neither did Clinton, Rangel, or... what's his name?

They are above the laws that they lay down for everyone else.

Government by the people really isn't a political mantra pushed by the likes of Kerry, Clinton or Rangel.

We are just obligated to say that it's true by self promoting liaisons while we lose our freedoms personally drip by drip.

If you say so, but beaurocrats are stupid and follow their guidelines mindlessly or they could lose their cushy jobs.

No, but I know a lot about yachts. And taxes.

The several pics I saw of Kerry’s boat at the Boat Basin showed Isabel at a transient pier.

I swear to God this clown is the gift that keeps on giving. Howie Carr was just starting to get dull too (unless you like his “dog shows” and that TV guy - yawn).

I like how he said he was going to register his yacht in MA... yeah right, unfortunately for him “Newport” was painted on it.

John Kerry might be worth having as Senator for the comedy value alone.

I will never applaud hypocrisy. Now if Senator Kerry was constantly screaming against taxes, then I might forgive him. Same reason I don’t forgive Spitz for cavorting with whores, or, conversely, any of the anti-gay politicians who turn out to be gay themselves.

Hypocrisy has just never sat well with me.

whether owed or not

Typical hypocritical bullshit from a liberal who, like the kennedys, is not living by the rules he wants imposed on the rest of us--not only is Kerry NOT guilty of tax evasion, but he poses as if he should be praised for overpaying taxes he didn't pay.
