Christopher Hitchens: Hugo Boss (Chavez so nuts he may announce "that he is a poached egg")
Slate ^ | 8/2/10 | Christopher Hitchens

What I learned about Hugo Chávez's mental health when I visited Venezuela with Sean Penn.

Recent accounts of Hugo Chávez's politicized necrophilia may seem almost too lurid to believe, but I can testify from personal experience that they may well be an understatement. In the early hours of July 16—just at the midnight hour, to be precise—Venezuela's capo officiated at a grisly ceremony. This involved the exhumation of the mortal remains of Simón Bolívar, leader of Latin America's rebellion against Spain, who died in 1830. According to a vividly written article by Thor Halvorssen in the July 25 Washington Post, the skeleton was picked apart—even as Chávez tweeted the proceedings for his audience—and some teeth and bone fragments were taken away for testing. The residual pieces were placed in a coffin stamped with the Chávez government's seal. In one of the rather free-associating speeches for which he has become celebrated, Chávez appealed to Jesus Christ to restage the raising of Lazarus and reanimate Bolívar's constituent parts. He went on:

I had some doubts, but after seeing his remains, my heart said, "Yes, it is me." Father, is that you, or who are you? The answer: "It is me, but I awaken every hundred years when the people awaken."

The oil rich Venezuelan economy is driven by oil prices. There but for the grace of high oil price levels Chavez survives. Should oil prices decline to $35 Chavez will go the way of all South American demagogues.Swinging from a lamppost.

It is very sad that the remains of Bolivar have been violated and desecrated by this scumbag slob.

To understand the complete difference of the lowly Chavez and the great Bolivar lets look at the words of Bolivar in a thank you note he sent Lafayette for a gift of George Washington’s portrait...
March, 1826

“I have been honored to look for the first time on the noble features of the man who did so much good on behalf of the New World....I experienced a mysterious exhilaration on learning in the newspapers that you had had the generosity of heart to honor me with one of the treasures from Mount Vernon...There are no words to tell you how much my heart treasures this gift...Washington’s family honors me beyond any aspirations my imagination could conceive...”

I read the whole piece, and I recommend it.

Penn actually gave Chavez a couple of ‘outs’ in his conversations with him, which he did not take. He is at the point where he is nakedly insane, and has no handlers to obscure that fact to people.

He literally believes he is the incarnation of Simon Bolivar. Moreover, Hitchens is calling the regime down there a ‘necrocracy’, or a ‘mauslocracy’.

He just bought a bunch of Russian warships, in violation of the Monroe Doctrine. Somebody should queue up the picture of Obama and Chavez hugging.

Even Sean Penn believes Chavez is crazy. No CIA analyst can better underline the actionability of that bit of intelligence.

Keep Obama away from Mussolini's grave! (I think there was very little left of him before he was buried BTW.)

The Left likes to point out that as crazy as Chavez may be, Venezuelans were stupid enough to elect him, fair-and-square. Maybe that is even true, at least the first time he was elected. So I guess Venezuela deserves everything it gets.

But then I realize that Americans were stupid enough to elect Obama as well.

So I can’t really look down on Venezuelans....

The pun in the title has several layers. “Hugo Boss” is a clothing company. The original Hugo Boss made uniforms for the SS with slave labor.

Hugo would do well to dwell on the great words of Simon Bolivar his hero;

El que hace la revolucion, hara el mar

Trans: "He who makes the revolution, plows the sea". The metaphor: meaning, you cannot change anything such as human nature..

I read somewhere that there's an old saying in Venezuela: There are no good presidents and no bad presidents. Only presidents when the price of oil is high and presidents when the price of oil is low.

in violation of the Monroe Doctrine

Dude, the Monroe Doctrine is just so racist, colonialist and unfashionable. I mean it was written by a dead white male, and the professors say it was all about white imperialism. What's the matter with you?

Actually I wish more people would think about the Monroe Doctrine, but I doubt if 10% of college students know what it is.

Like the Germans and Hitler. He promised them the world, and they believed him. Yeah, and kinda like Obama.

We oughta be asking why the US didn’t support the military coup against him back in the early 2000’s. I remember seeing it on television and d@mn near shouting that we oughtta be supporting it at all costs. But instead, we got the State Department deploring the action and demanding his reinstatement.

Yes.

It was: sleep with the Kennedeys. She ended up dead at a young age.
