SOUTH BRUNSWICK As a Muslim growing up in East Brunswick, Atiya Aftab missed classes and had to make up school work to be with her family on two important holidays: Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting, and Eid al-Adha, the Feast of Sacrifice.
As a mother of three in South Brunswick, Aftab has seen her children go through the same thing.
Until now.
In a decision that sent ripples of hope across the Muslim community well beyond New Jersey, the South Brunswick Board of Education has approved school closings in the 2010-11 school year for two Islamic holy days.
To Aftab, it was an acknowledgment Muslims "are part of the community fabric."
To South Brunswick school board president Matthew Speesler, it was time the district needed "to recognize" the two Muslim holy days and the Hindu new year, Diwali.
About 10 of the nearly 600 school districts in New Jersey acknowledge Muslim holy days as official school holidays, according to the New Jersey School Boards Association. Patersons school calendar recognizes them. Passaics calendar includes Diwali, but not the Islamic holidays. Atlantic City lists Ed al-Fitr but not Eid al-Adha. Other districts that have closed for the holidays include Irvington, Prospect Park, Cliffside Park and Plainfield.

Muslims “are part of the community fabric.”.....?
And you are bending over to prove it!....
Can't call it Christmas but they can recognize Muslim "holy days" and "official school holidays".
The times they are a changing. I loathe the Communists in the ACLU.
Also, schools will now teach kids how to make bombs and strap them on....
two fine days for the citizens of NJ to enjoy pork festivals
barbeque mmm mmm mmmm
Why do these people always over-read and otherwise misinterpret these actions?
It is not an 'acknowledgment.' It is a rollover by a politically correct board but moreover it is simply a matter of economics. Attendance below a certain threshold (say 75%) affects school funding, you see. It's why school systems are so quick to call a snow day. Student safety? Naw - it's strictly about the cash. If a large portion of students stay home then the school misses the threshold and thus loses a day of funding.
No doubt CAIR and similar enablers would have gotten involved eventually so the decision is a preemption of sorts - sorry but the lefty lawyers will have to look elsewhere.
Those muslim devils sacrifice pathetic little animals in their dirty religion.
Just because they ae part of the community that doesn’t mean forcing stuff on the entire community.
I wish the days of recognizing people were part of the community meant praising the fact they were so integrated into the AMERICAN WAY OF LIFE they were happy to BE AMERICAN and adapted their way of living to fit in here.
Common sense out the window. What next? Dedicating some city buses to be blown up for jihadi training purposes? Allowing the Muslim Brotherhood to firebomb a nearby church because it’s cheaper than the city demolishing it under eminent domain?
The percentage of Muslims in the US is very, very small. Why no Buddhist holidays, Hindu holidays?

Not much trace of a muslim to be found from this page. Check out the breakdown of racial, ethnic, and language-speaking residents.
Says some of the communities are also celebrating Hindu holidays.
But what are they CALLED at the school, that’s what I’d like to know.
I agree!...The damn liberals do not want them to assimulate. They want them to drag all there diversity along for the ride so we can see it! It just leads to chaos and fighting which is exactly where we are headed!
Schools in my town are closed for a couple Jewish holidays.
These are two more days the teachers will get paid not to work and the students will have to make up at the end of the year and the teachers will also get paid for those makeup days.
BTW, the start of the holy days is only approximate ( as the calendar is concerned ), even in the Middle East. It can be estimated but still can vary up to two weeks later than the previous year. It's impossible to reliably schedule from year to year. Those who deal with Middle Eastern operations and sales need to make huge allowances for this because it's the price of doing business there. It's a scheduling nightmare.
In other words thru out the burgeoning caliphate?
Drip, drip, drip...
...Jewish holidays ...
Around here, everyone knows that the Amish Christmas and Ascension Day are unofficial holidays. A lot of the kids miss school and businesses don’t expect Amish trade.
However, there’s not been much noise about making those days school holidays!
