Fifa has launched an investigation into allegations that the North Korean World Cup coach and players were punished by the government after they lost all three of their games in the tournament in South Africa.
Last month, Radio Free Asia said that the Korean squad, apart from two foreign-based players, were subjected to 'harsh ideological criticism' after their team conceded the most goals of all 32 at the tournament.
Their coach Kim Jong-hun was also publicly humiliated and sentenced to hard labour for their performance.

Communists. They never change.
But hey, they have peace, right? Who needs freedom and personal rights when you can have peace?
I can imagine the conversation:
“You asked for an extra 200 grams of meat per week for the players, and you got it.
There’s no excuse for your failures, comrade.”
Wonder if the threat of such would make my ‘Boys play better? <):~o
Re-education for the ole ballcoach?
how’s that comminunism working out for ya, n.korea?
Well paid means they get to eat meat!
BTTT
They make enough to eat children if they wanted.
I can completely understand those goals. This team really only got into the finals on pure luck in the first place. The big losses to much higher-ranked teams were quite expected, and no rational person thought they’d make it out of the round-robin.
That the (IIRC) #105 ranked team didn’t get completely creamed by #1 Brazil, and actually managed a point in that game, was pretty unexpected and impressive, if not downright shocking. I thought if they managed even one point it would be against Ivory Coast, not against Portugal and no way against Brazil.
In short, they deserved to be well-received at home. They put up a good fight and did better than expected.
