I guess this means Israel just has a few days left to bomb it if they follow the same rules they did with the Iraq and Syria reactors, i.e. hitting them before they went live.

Russia says to load fuel in Iran reactor on Aug. 21

Published: 08.13.10, 12:10 / Israel News

Russia will begin to load fuel into the reactor at Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power station on August 21, a spokesman for Russia’s state atomic corporation said on Friday.

The spokesman said that loading the reactor with fuel would be a key step towards starting up the reactor at the Islamic Republic’s first nuclear power plant, though the reactor would not be considered operational from that date. (Reuters)

Iran confirms Russia will fuel Bushehr plant

Published: 08.13.10, 14:31 / Israel News

Iran’s atomic energy chief Ali Akbar Salehi on Friday confirmed next week’s launch of the Islamic republic’s first nuclear power plant, as announced by Russia which has helped build the facility.

“We are preparing to transfer the fuel inside the plant next week... Then we will need seven to eight days to transfer it to the reactor,” said Salehi. Ending years of delays, a spokesman for the Russian atomic agency said on Friday that the plant in the southern Iranian city of Bushehr will formally launch on August 21. (AFP)

I wonder if Hillary gave Russia a thumbs up. I can't believe Russia would do this without some sign from the US that they would no take action against Russia/Iran.

John Bolton: Russia’s Loading of Nuke Fuel Into Iran Nuclear Plant Means Aug. 21 Deadline for Israeli Attack
Friday, August 13, 2010 01:41 PM

By: David A. Patten

News that Russia will load nuclear fuel rods into an Iranian reactor has touched off a countdown to a point of no return, a deadline by which Israel would have to launch an attack on Iran’s Bushehr reactor before it becomes effectively “immune” to any assault, says former Bush administration U.N. Ambassador John R. Bolton.

Once the fuel rods are loaded, Bolton told Fox News on Friday afternoon, “it makes it essentially immune from attack by Israel. Because once the rods are in the reactor an attack on the reactor risks spreading radiation in the air, and perhaps into the water of the Persian Gulf.

In the step scheduled for Aug. 21, fuel will be shifted from storage to the reactor chamber. The second stage involves loading the fuel assemblies into the hardened stainless steel core. The final step is bringing the fuel rods close enough to begin the nuclear reaction.

Each of the 160, hexagonal fuel assemblies weighs about 700 kilograms, or 1,540 pounds, and loading a core typically takes about a month, Vladislav P. Bochkov, a spokesman for Rosatom, said in a telephone interview. “Then the rods are lowered and a chain reaction begins,” he said.

Russian technicians would bring the reaction to the minimal sustainable level, and then conduct tests on controls and radiation shields for two to three more months before the plant would begin generating electricity.

As soon as the fuel is irradiated it will begin to produce plutonium that could be used in an atomic weapon, and for this reason Russia has insisted on the spent fuel’s return as a condition for completing and fueling the plant.

The 64 tons of low-enriched uranium that Russia supplied for use near Bushehr far exceeds the 5,300 pounds the Iranians have produced for themselves to date, according to estimates by the International Atomic Energy Agency.
