Arizona escapee, alleged accomplice arrested

Authorities have captured an Arizona prison escapee and an alleged accomplice who have been on the run since last month, the Arizona Department of Corrections said late Thursday.

John McCluskey and Casslyn Mae Welch were arrested in the Springerville, Arizona-area, according to the department.

McCluskey, 45, was serving a 15-year sentence for attempted second-degree murder and other charges when he and fellow convicts Tracy Province and Daniel Renwick broke out of the prison July 30, allegedly with Welch's help.

Province and Renwick are already in custody.

Welch, who was on the visitation list for one of the inmates, threw cutting tools over a prison fence, corrections officials said earlier this month.

The hunt for McCluskey and Welch ranged from the Southwest to western Montana, and along the border with Canada, marshals said.

McCluskey and Welch are also suspected in the killings of a couple whose bodies were found in their burned out camper earlier this month in New Mexico, according to authorities.

Renwick, 36, was captured August 1 in a shootout with police in Rifle, Colorado. He was serving 22 years for second-degree murder when he escaped.

Am as sick of the word ‘alleged’ as I am of the word ‘unexpectedly’.

Enough already.

Let’s see? They escaped in Arizona, were seen in Montana, then in Arkansas and then caught in Arizona! They must have a lot of frequent flyer miles! :)

Or the police let them feel safe and give them room for error.

Nah - the task force of thousands needed some OT, lots of mileage @ $.50 a mile, and some nice per diem.

Stuff like this is a gravy train for our public "servants". Expect lots of new decks, swimming pools, maybe extra house payments. And ya gotta beef up that pension!

Might as well use it for the good it will do the victims and the public. If they are tried in NM for the murders of the OK couple, the most they can get it life in prison. Bill Richardson and his crony libs did away with the death penalty a couple of summers ago. More compassionate, etc. Not for the victims and their families. Misplaced justice.

Richardson want to pardon Billy the Kid. McCluskey is a piker by comparison.

After hearing this story on TV, the park ranger is probably lucky he wasn’t murdered. Wow, good work!
