McCain pays heavy price for reelection (MCNASTY ALERT)
Politico ^ | 2010-08-22 | David Catanese

John McCain holds a comfortable lead in the contentious Arizona Republican Senate primary, according to the most recent public polling, making him the strong favorite against former Rep. J.D. Hayworth on Tuesday.

But it’s been a costly road to a fifth term for the 2008 GOP presidential nominee, and the experience is likely to leave a lasting and unsightly stain on his legacy.

It’s not just the $20 million he’s spent already this election or the scorched earth campaign that he’s run. Rather, it’s the choices he’s made and the positions he’s embraced — and what it reveals about him — that could make for a complicated final chapter in his political biography.

Once the sponsor of comprehensive immigration reform with the late Sen. Ted Kennedy — a stance that hurt him with conservatives — McCain moved in a different direction this year. He switched his emphasis this summer to border security, embraced Arizona’s controversial hard-line immigration law and, in an ad, called on the federal government to “complete the danged fence” — three years after dismissing the notion of a border fence in a Vanity Fair article titled “Prisoner of Conscience.”

Four years ago, McCain also told students he supported repeal of the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy that bans gays from serving openly in the military. But in May, the former war hero and Navy prisoner of war promised to filibuster any bill including that change that landed on the Senate floor.

He sidestepped the climate change debate this year despite once being a Senate leader on the issue and he’s even distanced himself from the term that once seemed central to his political brand — his “maverick” trademark.

I’m not a DemocRAT and I don’t do drugs so I’m having a problem with this “comprehensive immigration reform” thing. Nobody ever says WHY we need “comprehensive immigration reform”. What the hell is wrong with the immigration laws we already have? When the murder rate goes up, I’ve never heard anyone suggest that we need “comprehensive homicide reform”. I don’t get it. To me, it appears as though “comprehensive immigration reform” is a white flag of surrender signaling to the foreign invaders (No mas! No mas!) that it’s okay to invade America and demand a slice of the American pie.

Heavy price my arse....he will go after conservatives with a vengeance...and I mean a vengeance.

We ain't seen nothing yet, he hated us before, it will be even worse now.

Because this will most likely be his last term, and he will make it count.

Make no mistake, MCCAIN WILL IN ESSENCE BE OBAMA'S VP, HE WILL HELP OBAMA FOR THE NEXT TWO YEARS, AND HELP HIM BE REELECTED.

Once this dude gets re-elected, he's going to run to the left so fast even the pundits will be speechless..The guy can't live without his "Friends across the isle"..

Damn sad that politics turned John McCain into such a sellout considering his Honorable service.

What amazes me is he’s spent $20 million BEFORE the primary! What will he spend in the general? And why why why is this position so important that he feels the need to spend that much?

TIME TO RETIRE Juan. You served your country well and faithfully when you were in the service and were called upon to give and endure more than most. Time to retire and enjoy what life you have left.

Hayworth's campaign has been one big FAIL.

Seems we're having the same problem here in Nevada.

You good folks in Arizona will be sorry if you put this man back in office! You all know he is a progressive liberal and trying to disguise himself on election year as a compassionate conservative. He never was and never will be! South Carolina is sick that they voted his clone, Ms. Grahamnesty, back in office. You will be too. Pleased don't do it!

Exactly what I was thinking when I read the article-—$20 million??!!

Voters need to really think about this, although as we have heard lately, over 50% depend on some form of government income. Arizona has huge retirement communities so I am sure they vote for their pocket books which is McCain all the way. Just like government agencies, those receiving benefits do not want to cut back to save America. They really DO NOT care about their grandchildren or those of us who pay for these benefits!

why we need “comprehensive” immigration reform.

IT will take decades to process the 15-30 million illegals then their serial immigaration family members 30 per immigrant.

SO you have to hire 150000 border patrols and use existing laws to prevent employment of illegals

OR

you can hire MILLIONS of acorn “obama money” types to be do nothing government employees to process the do nothing illegal aliens.

If you were a democrat which would give you the most voters?

hint mccain is a democrat.

I’m not a DemocRAT and I don’t do drugs so I’m having a problem with this “comprehensive immigration reform” thing.

Think of all the people, a majority of voters, and in fact a large proportion of people right here on "conservative" FR who become victims of the verbal manipulations and phony presentation of issues in the political world. And almost by definition the LEFT are the practitioners.

But the "Republicans", either by design or stupidity, are totally incapable of exposure.

That of course is what the Tea Party is about, but the Media filter is the Matrix.

The couple of a dull demoralized people and the Media have given us what we have.
