The old media realize that their market has been reduced to the hard left wing of the American body politic, and they cling to that last thread. Those seven figure salaries will soon be gone, but the old timers have made theirs, and will ride the diminishing gravy train to the bitter end.
Even MSNBC’s Morning Joe replaced a worn out radio program, and the radio program was far superior to Joe and Mika.

In Japan it’s called “Kisshya Kai” —press cartel. Membership is formal, non-members physically excluded.
They get 2gether after, say, the meeting with the press conference with the cabinet member and then they DECIDE what was said, who will report what, and when.
The upshot is that everyone feels realllly professional, and they end up beholden to their sources —they are de-facto extensions of “the system”.
Scandals end up reported by all, yes, but the critical detail is that they’re always BROKEN by the “alien space baby”-rag with the gurabia photos of the girl with her books exploding out of her impossibly tiny bikini top.
