Light turnout expected in state's first Aug. primary (illegals, SB 1070 top issues in Ariz.)

PHOENIX -- For the first time in state history, Arizona is holding its primary elections in August.

Experts predict between 20 and 25 percent of registered voters will go to the polls before they close at 7 p.m. Tuesday. They think the heat and humidity, which have put the Valley under an extreme heat warning, will keep some people home.

"That certainly is going to discourage people from going to the polls," said Maricopa County Recorder Helen Purcell.

News/Radio 92.3 KTAR's Jim Cross, out and about as the polls opened at 6 a.m., found illegal immigration and SB1070, the state's tough new immigration law, appeared to be the main issue driving people to the polls.

"I know the immigration issue's a big issue for everybody, and of course it is for me as well, but that wasn't the only reason I came out to vote," said one man, arriving at a central Phoenix precinct shortly after sunrise.

According to the Arizona Secretary of State's Office, more than 3.1 million people were registered to vote. They included 1,119,389 Republicans, 1,001,256 Democrats, 953,503 Independents, 24,143 Libertarians and 4,585 in the Green Party.

If that's the main issue and Arizona has not lost it's memory about McAmnesty it could be a good day for JD!

Light turnout + illegal immigration issues = turnout heavily favors JD.
The more an AZ voter wants McCain out, the more motivated they will be to vote today. And if they’ve got illegal immigration on their mind, then they’ve got McCain’s pro-amnesty positions on their mind, too.

Let’s hope we see another incumbent fall today.
McCain would be the biggest get yet.

From your mouth to the Lord’s ears! CNBC (gag) has McShame 15 to 21 points ahead of JD. Let’s hope they’re bluffing!

That sounds hopeful. The polls (last was Rasmussen in late July) showed JD losing to either McCain or the Dem.

The infomercial ad clips with Hayworth “telling viewers they can get free government money” were pretty deadly.

I can’t stand McCain, and he will undoubtedly turn back into a RINO scumback tomorrow in the AM, but the good people of AZ bought his lies again, I think.

I have hope for JD! The weather today is exceptionally hot and there is a HUGE storm coming in. Those determined to get JD in will put in the extra effort to vote. I don’t think Juan’s voters are as motivated.

If I was in AZ, I'd crawl over a red-hot sidewalk to vote against McCain.

I assume people in AZ know Sheriff Joe is for JD. I would think Joe’s endorsement would be the best you could get in AZ.

Sounds hopeful but to hear the MSM tell it, it’s McNasty’s to lose.

If I was an AZ voter I would walk 5 miles in the desert to vote for JD.

McCain sickens me.

If I was in AZ and McLame won the primary, I`d vote third party or abstain from voting for that seat in the general.

I'm seriously thinking of writing in "None Of The Above" or "No, Just Hell No."
