TRENTON Gov. Chris Christie fired state education commissioner Bret Schundler this morning after Schundler refused to resign in the wake of the controversy over the state's loss of up to $400 million in federal school funding, two officials briefed on the situation said.
Christie's chief of staff, Richard Bagger, ordered Schundler to turn in his resignation Thursday night after federal officials released a video that appeared to contradict the commissioner's account of what transpired when the New Jersey delegation met with the federal officials to review funding application and review process.
By this morning Schundler had not quit, so Christie ordered his termination.

Damn I love this guy! He dose not mince words nor back down.
Guess you’re going to have to get a real job now, chief. Good luck with that, I hear the economy’s a little tough lately.
Yesterday the Gov said no one would be fired for the mistake.
This is different....the firee apparently was lying. He is fired for not telling the truth.
I don't think it was his fault. It happened on his watch and he was in charge so he has to take responsibility.

Chris Christie: he don’t ... he don’t’ ... he don’t mess around ... HEY!
His chief-of-staff is Dick Bagger?
The Captain is always responsible for his ship.............
In the video of Christie explaining the mess, he said he’s not firing anyone. However, he went on to explain that one of his people gave the feds the info they needed verbally at a meeting. Now this comes out and the news says that video of a meeeting contradicted what Christie had been told. SO after Christie defended the guy, he found out the guy had lied to him.
I’ve known TWO guys, not related, named Richard Gage............
Yeah, Bret Shundler is actually a great conservative guy. I believe he ran a campaign for either Gov or Senate in the past 5-10 years and lost. This is not your run of the mill liberal bureaucrat.
Has any one listed which states got and which didn’t?
Maryland yes D Gov
DC yes D mayor etc
Virginia no R Gov
NJ no R Gov
Is there a pattern of D state govs getting and R controlled states not?
I realize VA lost a big Military Command (which is probably justified) but kind of weird when you have 2 D Senators and lose something of that magnitude.
What the sequence of events looks like this:
Schundler told Christie that the data was missing because a staffer in the state department of education accidentally put the wrong paperwork together, and that all the federal government needed to do was ask and the information would have been provided.
So Christie made the announcement on that basis, criticizing the federal government for not requesting the data.
The feds have responded by showing Christie a videotape in which the feds ask Schundler for the data and Schundler says he can't provide it.
In other words, Christie trusted Schundler and stood up for him, only to find out that there is video evidence that things went much differently from the way Schundler represented them.
This is really unfortunate, Bret is one of the good guys.
The unions and statists over at NJ.com are having a cow.
Gotta love Christie.
I think Florida was on the list...trying to push us to the dark side with bribery. I hope the folks don’t fall for it!
B@lls of steel.
I agree....BTW, the article said that as pf Thursday evening, Bret was willing to resign, so why the firing..
So now he can play Quarterback...
