Downer is a former state legislator who changed to GOP several years ago. Establishment/RINO type from way back.

Anybody who ever registered as a Democrat, ran for office as a Democrat, or won office as a Democrat, or who was appointed by a Democrat IS, if he's running under a Republican banner, a RINO.
The people so many want to call RINOs are usually just Republicans that are not Conservative enough for today's taste, but a real RINO is a real RINO ~ and we still have a bunch of them.
The primaries where they are featured this year is showing that they have a tough time winning!

Landry’s at 50%. He might win this nomination outright tonight. If not, he’ll thump Downer in the runoff. I can’t see how Downer improves from a mid-thirties showing.
Frankly, if Downer wanted this seat, he should have run in 2004 instead of leaving it to Tauzin’s kid, which helped lead to Melancon’s election in the first place.

If there’s a runoff, we should encourage Downer to drop out. He’s perceived to be the incumbent and if he can do no better than this, he should hang it up.

It’s also not helping that Downer is managing to lose every single parish except Terrebonne (his own). And Terrebone has only 11 precincts left out, and all the rest is pro-Landry. Landry may win tonight after all.

Upset in making in LA-3 open seat. Favored candidate Hunt Downer down to Tea Party candidate Jeff Landry by a 50-35% margin, may avoid runoff.

Metairie, in Steve Scalise’s district. No action here tonight except for the Senate primary.
