Feds Investigate 'Cash for Clunkers' Car Dealers
ABC News ^ | August 28, 2010 | By Gregory Korte

The government is investigating at least 20 car dealerships it claims violated the rules of last year's cash-for-clunkers program. Government auditors say up to $94 million in rebates may be ineligible because they lack the proper documentation.

NHTSA spokeswoman Karen Aldana said there's no evidence of widespread fraud and noted that the violations are a small fraction of the 18,915 dealers who participated.

"We project that almost 22,000 transactions lacked supporting documentation, such as proof of insurance, in the CARS database at the time of our audit," Assistant Inspector General Joseph W. Comé wrote in an April report. But "some of these transactions might ultimately prove to meet program requirements with additional documentation."

With the hoops of fire that car dealers had to jump through to be a part of this program, I would imagine it was by design. A large portion of those that took advantage of the $8,000 “tax credit” for 1st time homebuyers are being audited as well.

Government doesn’t want to pay the rebates so they’re going after the car dealerships. Typical Obama regime mentality.

Fraud, cheating, waste and abuse in a government program? I’m SHOCKED! How could this have possibly happened? Perhaps their “campaign contributions” to their local D congresscritter didn’t arrive in time or were too puny?

” Hey 1st time homeowners who took the tax cut...You’re next. “

Yep

And I wonder how many GM dealers will be found guilty, compared to Ford dealerships?

Ford, Toyota = 19 guilty

GM = 1 guilty (a dealership which is not liked by GM )

Obama and the UAW already tried to murder Toyota.

Now empirical evidence has shown that most of the gas pedal problems emanated from “human error “

Barry and his army of bureaucrats have perfected their standard operating practice. As we saw last week, when New Jersey elected a Republican Governor the federal education bureaucrats rejected 400 million in funds allegedly because the thousand page form was missing a few pieces of information. Barry's corrupt Administration is wielding arcane rules and bureaucracy as a weapon. Now he's employing an expensive staff to launch investigations over the paltry, unnecessary “cash for clunkers” checks. The idea was obviously unworkable from the start.

shocking. A government boondoogle didn’t work because the paperwork wasn’t right.

Yeah we should REALLY keep giving these people the keys to the castle.
