Most of us wish it were a requirement.

As an American who hasn't served, I believe that as well. Maybe after all the dust settles, we'll make an Amendment that all those running for federal office must have served in the military, and have been honorably discharged.

THAT...and to VOTE you must either OWN property or PAY Income Taxes

If you do that they will all join the reserve unit and never see a day of real duty. Also, there are some folks( not Joe Biden) who are unable to serve because of a disability, etc but would make a first rate lawmaker.
