... They said Ahmed Mohamed Nasser al-Soofi, 48, a Yemeni living in Detroit who has permanent resident status in the U.S., had merely packed items requested by friends and taped them together to ensure they did not get mixed up.

He and Hezem Abdullah Thabi al-Murisi, 37, a Yemeni who travelled to the U.S. on a visitor's visa, could now walk free from custody in Holland once the FBI has reviewed the evidence.

Last night the FBI said it had yet to make a decision...

Yeah, that's how I would keep items separate.

I heard this story on NPR yesterday morning, and wondered why there were no mention of the nationalities of the men. Now I know the reason.

*Per the 9/11 Report, the 9/11 hijackers did not know each other either.

What is the actual purpose of their ridiculous claim that they had these particular things, taped together in the way they were, because friends had asked for them and they didn’t want them to get mixed up? it’s obviously 100% unadulterated garbage. Is anyone expected to believe it?

They also had knives and box cutters. Doesn’t everyone travel with those?

But there was confusion yesterday as U.S. officials contradicted the earlier version of events and insisted the men were not planning an attack and that the arrests were 'something from nothing'. They added that the men did not know each other and were not involved in a plot.

The "US officials" sure figured this out fast. Eric Holder himself musta been the principle investigator

"They" (the lame media) was saying yesterday that there was absolutely no connection between the two men - they traveled seperately and didn't know each other - OMG! exactly how STUPID are the media and those who supposedly investigated this event? Did it ever occur to these idiots that these terrorists - yes I said the "T" word - don't they think these two TERRORISTS could be lying? I bet those two terrorists are laughing there butts off at the USA, how gullible the infidels are - IMO that was definetly a dry run -

OMG I am listening to a psa for saving the freakin' TURTLES - REALLY???? REALLY???? How about a psa to SAVE THE DAMN COUNTRY.

Well isn't that how covert opp's work.
A need to know basis only.
The mules don't need to know they are testing to see if the TSA will trip on cell phones and liquid containers taped together. And the press sure did they're job delivering the intel promptly.

“You know, Ahmed, I really hate it when I get a phone with that ikky-stikky tape stuff all over it. I mean, we are grateful that you can buy so many untraceable phones and bring them to us — but why you can’t jsut leave them in their boxes or maybe a baggie? No. With you, is always with the tape and all that ikky-stikky crap all over them. Stop this on future flights, please!

Absolutely nothing about the official response of American authorities to this story makes any sense.

Even if these guys weren't making a dry run, this brings up a sobering thought.

In Europe, many airlines have installed GSM cell phone "picocells" in their aircraft that allows passengers to use their own cell phones in flight to make and receive regular cell phone calls.

Since cell phones have been used to detonate IEDs in Iraq and Afghanistan, imagine a cell phone triggered bomb planted in checked baggage in the hold of a picocell equipped aircraft.

You could remotely detonate the bomb with your cell phone, and not even have to try to light your shoe. Or somebody on the ground tracking the flight using FlightAware could call the cell phone in the luggage when the aircraft was over whatever country or landmark they wished to make a statement about.

This would be much more reliable than the pressure switches or simple timers used in the past. If a flight is delayed, the FlightAware website will keep the ground based bomber informed of when the aircraft takes off, and when it is over the infidel country du jour.

Or you could even originate a flight in a third-world country, and just watch the connecting flights as the baggage is transferred, then detonate the bomb during the final leg of the flight into, say, Dulles International.

Scary, scary possibilites.

I would post what info I found that says they DO know each other, but it's from a newspaper we can't post ANYTHING from: The Detroit News - They knew each other, according to some Arab group in Detroit. Also, the family of at least one of them said it is a cultural tradition to tape things together: http://www.mlive.com/news/detroit/index.ssf/2010/08/reports_cousin_of_man_question.html

Pepto can cause problems with an x-ray.

a medicine (such as Pepto-Bismol) that has bismuth in the last 4 days. Barium and bismuth can block a clear picture.
