Jobless claims drop 6,000 to 472,000 (Only 472,000 lost their jobs this week. <s)

The number of people applying for unemployment benefits fell by 6,000 to 472,000 in the week ended Aug. 28, but first-time claims remain at an elevated level, government data showed Thursday.

After a brief surge earlier this year, numerous signs indicate the U.S. economy appears to have cooled off over the summer, stoking concerns about whether what's been a fragile recovery can be sustained. Jobless claims, for example, have risen 10% since early July.

Economists surveyed by MarketWatch had expected initial claims to total about 473,000 -- the same as the week before. Yet claims in the prior week were revised up by 5,000 to a total of 478,000, basically canceling out the latest decline. See our complete economic calendar and consensus forecast.

loosing a job sux.

loosing what was thought to be a career sux more.

been there, done that... thrice.

many in the next round of the reckoning are going to be losing their careers as a direct result of actions by those they politically supported in 08’. sadly, as billy joel says in allentown: “these jobs are going boys and they aint coming back”.

No, only 472,000 filed for assistance.

I’m sure many more lost their jobs.

Kenyan economics.

Dumb question, but is it possible that the rate of job losses may be slowing due to the fact that there are fewer jobs to lose?

I like to put things into perspective for those liberals who can't comprehend large numbers.

Thanks for bringing a smile to an otherwise depressing thread. :)

(Maybe I should say depressing news article instead... unlike Obama, I won’t cast blame on an innocent thread for what our current leaders have imposed upon us. heh)

These were surprising unemployment figures to me!

I have noticed that the MSM is cutting back on their use of such adjectives, and in general, are sounding a little less breathless when reporting about Pres. Obama. I don't want to read too much into that, of course.
