Fareed Zakaria: Al-Qaeda Not Really A Big Deal, Americans ‘Overreacted’ To 9/11

Fareed Zakaria warns in Newsweek that Al-Qaeda was significantly more incompetent that Americans believed in the aftermath of 9/11, and the result is a “national-security state” that threatens civil liberties. Any other time of year, comments like this would be controversial at best, especially from the mild-mannered Zakaria. So close to the anniversary of the most painful event in recent American history, it borders on the callous.

In one of his final columns in Newsweek (Zakaria will be soon moving to Time), Zakaria questions whether the American government should have increased spending in national security after 9/11, since “Al Qaeda is simply not that deadly a threat.” He notes that the US spends “more than the rest of the world spends put together” and that the Department of Homeland Security and it’s satellite organizations “produce 50,000 reports a year—136 a day!—which of course means few ever get read.” Imagine that– the United States spends more money on national security than other countries; given the open-endedness of his point, this means we should probably be shocked that the US is spending more money on national security than, say, Switzerland or Vanuatu.

I wonder if this level of stupidity actually causes Mr. Zakaria any physical discomfort. Does his stupid really burn?

I don't buy this for a second. Americans are adults, we can discuss this most important of issues at any time, we don't turn all timid and weepy when discussing national security.

Zakaria is yet another moron who speaks from the secure position of lefty living under the very security he so disdains. No surprise coming from someone who writes for Newsweek.

No he is a muslim terrorist working in the Govt Media which includes ALL of TV which supports hussein and Islam.

Rush and Savage - I give them credit for pointing out the fact the entire media and ALL of TV are for the islamics due to investors in all the TV networks from Islamic countries.

Meanwhile Joe Six Pack watches the national felons league and NCAA which fawn over The Iman while he drinks beer and shoves corn cobs up his ........

A nation of idiots brainwashed by TV.

It’s both pathetic and amusing that this numbskull talks about the incompetence/ineffectiveness of AQ without ever mention what George Bush DID to all islamoterroists in Iraq when he set up a flypaper state and attracted (and killed) them by the tens of thousands. Their best and brightest, there dumbest and lamest, and everyone in between... an army of would-be America-attackers died in Iraq.

It’s sad that so many of our guys had to die too, and it’s doubly sad that Bush could never articulate his policy above the lame and unbelievable “democracy for muzzies”... but the fact remains: to the extent that islamoterrorists are weak today, it’s due to the war in Iraq where so many of them died.

There is an element of truth.

Are we safer because we created a dept of homeland security?

Are our borders more secure?

Maybe he should tell that to the 3,000+ families who lost family members and friends that day. I bet if he were in the towers that day he wouldn’t have made such a ridiculous statement. Unfortunately there is no cure for stupid

I would say any group that can train and plan undetected for 3 years and successfully hijack 4 planes to be used as weapons..... crash 3 of them into their targets killing more people and totally destroying the buildings (far surpassing their expectation)..... then have the 4th plane fail only because the passengers had cell phones and knew what was going on.....I would say that that group “ is simply not that deadly a threat”

a “national-security state” that threatens civil liberties

No, I'll tell you what threatens civil liberties:

1. American local and state governments that have stated a willingness to look the other way at sharia law matters. They're endorsing the freedom of fathers and husbands to rape, torture, and set their female family members on fire.

2. The refusal to acknowledge women in Iraq being able to vote, get an education past junior high, and participate in government for the first time EVER. It's more important to frame the killing of ba'athists, who are responsible for the torture-murder of thousands each, as an "atrocity". The liberation of 30 million people is a "war crime".

3. Whenever a muslim country puts down an uprising that kills tens of thousands of people, the islamic leaders worldwide are dead silent. Have any comment, Fareed? How about the stonings in Iran, any comment there?

Fareed Zakaria is total garbage and so is his "religion".

But of course being upset that some church a half a world away is burning Korans isn’t overreacting.
