11 September: Some more information regarding the Copenhagen bomber.

According to Danish newspapers the man was arraigned today and will stay in jail for four weeks during the investigation, the first 9 days will be in solitary confinement.

Both newspapers describe him as dark haired, dark skinned and with lots of wounds in his face and a black eye he had the look of a boxer.

He lacks the lower part of his left leg.

Although none of the newpapers brings this up, the lack of a leg could indicate that he has been involved in other war or terrorist activites

Initially he spoke English to the police - or at least indicated that he had a good understanding of the language. Later he has refused to speak English and during the his appearance in the Court he had the proceedings he used a french-speaking interpreter.

Most of the proceedings were held behind closed doors. According to the police the name of the bomber is still not known. Initially it was said he could be Caucasian or North African, His looks and the fact that he speaks french indicates that he is from either Morocco or Algeria.

Interesting to note in Cindy's post (#8) that the police was looking for cars with French, Belgium or Dutch number plates. That also points towards Morocco or Algeria.

I guess we were wrong. Not an Amish this time either.

Security update [Denmark]

http://www.cphpost.dk/news/national/88-national/49962-explosion-possibly-terror-related.html

“Explosion possibly terror related”
SATURDAY, 11 SEPTEMBER 2010 11:42 KM NEWS

SNIPPET: “Security at possible terrorist targets stepped up

Police nationwide are on increased alert for possible terrorist attacks after yesterday’s arrest of a man in conjunction with a minor explosion in central Copenhagen.

The move, which includes additional security at Copenhagen Airport as well as possible targets, comes after investigators initially downplayed terrorism as a possible motive.

Evidence now indicates that the explosion was a failed terrorist attack, and intelligence service PET could not rule out that man taken into custody as a suspect may have had accomplices.”

SNIPPET: “The police have also indicated that a pistol was found at the scene of the explosion.

The suspect has refused to talk to police, but has been identified as a foreign citizen. He remains in hospital after receiving light injuries when the bomb exploded in the bathroom of a hotel near Copenhagen’s Nørreport Station, the nation’s busiest railway hub.”

Further updates: Ekstra Bladet (Danish tabloid) reports that the probable aim for the bomber was the office of Jyllands Posten in Århus. Jyllands Posten was the newspaper that published the Mo-cartoons. Apparently the offices of the paper (in Århus but not in Copenhagen) are now guarded by heavily armed police. Belgium police has started a parallel investigation. The arrested man has apparently Belgium papers. According to the the Belgium paper Het Nieuwsblad the man used a Belgium passport with a false name. Belgium passports have for a long time been favoured by terrorists since they have been easy to obtain and to forge.

From the Copenhagen Post.

Belgians begin explosion investigation

Danish police continue to remain mum about bomber’s identity, possible target

Belgian officials have opened an investigation into the identity of the man arrested in Copenhagen on Friday in connection with a minor explosion, reports public broadcaster DR.

The man, who has refused to give his identity, was reportedly carrying papers from two foreign countries.

Danish police have not stated the names of the countries, but according to Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad, the suspect was carrying a passport from that country with a false name.

According to a spokesperson for Belgian prosecutors, such an investigation is normal when a Belgian resident is involved in a serious crime abroad.

A judge in Copenhagen on Saturday ordered the man held on remand until 4 October. Speaking through a French translator, the suspect, described as in his 40s and missing the lower half of one of his legs, plead innocent on charges of planning to detonate a bomb and reckless endangerment of other people’s lives.

He was also charged with illegal possession of a loaded pistol.

According to the police’s theory, the man assembled the bomb and intended to use it to kill or maim others.

No official announcement has been made of the suspect’s potential target. But Ekstra Bladet newspaper, citing sources close to the investigation, reported on Sunday that among the man’s possessions was a map with a ring around the main office of Jyllands-Posten newspaper in Århus.

Jyllands-Posten has been the subject of numerous threats since September 2005, when it published cartoons of the prophet Mohammed. It recently completed a multi-million kroner security upgrade of its Århus office in order to ward off possible attackers.

I see the bomber had a Belgian passport.

Belgium is an attractive place for "asylum" seekers. From Flanders news.

Yes, sure is. And of course Belgium passports are/were easy to obtain. (I discussed this years ago on FR, when the antecedentia of our own ("Swedish") Gitmo prisoner MehdiGhezali was on the agenda.)

The police still does not know who the "bomb-man" is. Apparently, he was carrying three different passports, probably all false. Latest story is that one of them was from Luxembourg, one of the others probably from Belgium. The police has released the names and the passport numbers to all Danish hotels, but not yet to the press.

However, other information has been released including a photo of the man in question, and a full description of him: 169 cm long, 25 - 35 years old, medium/athletic build, scar to the right of his nose, broad nose pointing to the right. Looks like it has been broken several times. Missing lower right leg, prosthesis. (Oh, yes, this guy has been through some tough times....probably not a quire boy.)

Link in Danish here, includes video of his escape from the hotel.
