Champ ends Williams' run (Kim Clijster's beats Venus Williams. Now No Americans Left in US Open)

This isn't what CBS had in mind for its Saturday night prime-time women's U.S. Open final -- an event first created because of the Williams-sister phenomenon.

Vera Zvonareva vs. Kim Clijsters-zzzzz.

Hours after popular top-seeded Great Dane Caroline Wozniacki was eliminated, Venus Williams followed her out the Flushing Meadows door after a stunning collapse.

Venus, with the Ashe Stadium crowd pulling for her Belgian opponent, stood a second-set tiebreaker away from advancing to her first Open final since 2002. But Venus proceeded to cough it up in a horrible tiebreaker, letting the golden opportunity blow away in the wind.

With injured sister Serena Williams watching from the windswept players' box and her mother Oracene Price covered in blankets because of bronchitis, Clijsters made them feel even colder as she rallied from a set down and posted a 4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-4 semifinal victory.

"Obviously in the tiebreak, I wasn't able to play as well as I wanted," Venus said. "I had too many errors."

Clijsters, the defending champion, tonight faces Zvonareva, this year's Wimbledon runner-up whose furthest jaunt at the Open in seven prior appearances was the fourth round. Zvonareva also has beaten Clijsters in their past two meetings -- last month in Montreal and in July at Wimbledon.

This year may have been Venus' last chance at Open glory. The 30-year-old has not won here since stringing together crowns in 2000 and 2001.

Good. No Williams sisters is always a good thing.

This statement is BS —> “Vera Zvonareva vs. Kim Clijsters-zzzzz.”

**IF** the writer actually followed tennis, he’d know these two play better tennis, and HARDER tennis than 99.999% of the women. This match will NOT be a snoozer.

AND! At least we won’t have to put up with drama, bullying, classless outfits, histrionics and temper tantrums.

I look forward to seeing these two play.

Afterall Mr. sportswriter, why do you think the crowd was pulling for Venus’ opponent???

Actually I look forward to a great final. These two ladies are both good athletes. Hope Vera can keep it together otherwise we are looking at a drama of epic proportions again (like last year). I am rooting for Kim.

Go, Kimmie, go.

And, before you get all nasty with me...

The Williams family believes Venus and Serena have been unappreciated. Price (their mother) recently told The Post black icons only are given their due after they die.

Typical. The Williams have been the race card from day one. The reason they don't get any respect is because they have not an ounce of humility, are arrogant, selfish, race-baiting and childish and have been from the very start of their careers.

Even though they make millions a year we still get this crap from them. I say the sooner they are gone the sooner tennis can get back to normal.

Yeah, for years the tennis world blamed their father for the racist crap. Now it appears the truth is out - they are all racists.

I remember when they first came on the scene I heard Martina Hingis say something about none of the other girl’s liked the Williams Sisters.

At the time I just thought it was their attitude but it turns out that attitude has a big racial chip on the shoulder.

Speaking of which, does anyone know what Serena did to herself? Nose job? Eye job? She looks different.

“he’d know these two play better tennis, and HARDER tennis than 99.999% of the women.”

Clijster also plays a lot faster than many other women players:

She’s there for tennis—not to be a drama queen.

Evonne Goolagong was the first tennis star who was a member of an oppressed black minority. She managed to maintain class and at the same time help the Aboriginal community. Too bad the Williams sisters do not fulfill a similar role model position.

RE: Good. No Williams sisters is always a good thing.

No one is rooting for an American Player anymore... it’s hard to play in one’s own home court.

Utter and complete BS. There are plenty of Americans rooting for Americans. Maybe they don't want to root for arrogance, selfishness and racism. Or, maybe they don't want to root for a hyphenated American but someone who is naturally proud of their country.

“No one is rooting for an American Player anymore”

I usually do, but I also prefer feminine women to these large muscular pumped up power hitting athletes like the Williams’.

Yesterday’s match was also very entertaining.

Kim sliced & diced Venus in the third set. Looked to me as tho Venus started to lose her temper with herself. Not a good thing when playing tennis at this level.

“I’m hoping for another baby/momma hug at the end”

I’d say chances are 95% in favor of this outcome.
