Nine years after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, one thing remains certain: Some politicians and media types can stir the nation's darker impulses.
"This is a controversy ginned up by the right-wing media," said the Rev. Jim Wallis, a progressive evangelical Christian author and activist who serves on the advisory council to the White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships.
"People are making a mistake of believing what the media points to as real," Wallis said. "All you have to do to get attention - whether you're in a cave in Afghanistan or a pastor in Florida - is to be on the extreme.
But opinion polls show the public's feelings toward Islam have deteriorated since former President George W. Bush asserted in the days after the Sept. 11 attacks that the nation was not at war with Islam.
Only 30 percent of Americans say they have a "favorable opinion" of Islam, according to a Pew Research Center survey in August. Five years ago, 41 percent did.
A different Pew poll last month found that nearly 1 in 5 Americans believes President Obama is a Muslim - up from 11 percent a year ago. He is a Christian.

It grows because Islam reveals itself day by day.
The Imam threatening all of America if the Mosque is moved.
Bring it on Islam. Let’s get this party started. The sooner the better.
The right wing media. I don’t need to read any further to reveal to myself that this guy is full of crap.

Large descriptive title when “dingbat” would serve just as well
Let’s be honest shall we?
The “best and the brightest” don’t go within a country mile of the SRM.
"He is a Christian", is an opinion, not a statement of fact. Only God and Obama know the truth.
It is rare that the media will report the results of a poll, and then give a statement of fact about the actual conditions. Except in this case. The media virtually always clarifies the results of this poll with a statement such as this. Bias, anyone?
The jihadists remind us of their evil ways.
They and they alone are to blame.
NEVER FORGET
Islam has not changed in 9 years.
Ever notice how the word "progressive" in any context essentially means "anti-"? A progressive Christian is an anti-Christian. A progressive democrat is anti-democracy. A progressive Catholic is an anti-Catholic. And so on, and so on. Once this is understood things begin to make more sense.
Of the 30%: they are either muslim themselves or there is something seriously wrong with them.
.
“NEVER FORGET””. And Never Forgive.
In that case, I am a progressive progressive.
Gee, what could possibly cause anti-Islam sentiment to grow?
The beheadings, murders, bombings, threats, abuse of women, subjugation of non-Muslims, stonings, intolerance, etc?
Naw, Islam is just swell. The lefties in SF (who despise Christianity and Christians with all the passion they can possibly muster) tell me so.
That's why I buy 30-round mags.
The libs have now aligned themselves with every illiterate wackjob who takes up the jihad. Every attack on America or Americans around the world shall be laid at their feet.
“Treason” is a word that belongs in that sentence as well.
Good point, I have been thinking the same thing.
Nearly all news, in our nation, is opinion and based on little or no fact...imho
Again your point is valid. So valid in fact, I cannot type further.
Folks keep looking for “truth” in the words and statements coming from the progressive MSM, where quite frankly none is expected.
It’s damned aggravating.
Here is how they operate. It’s quite simple and explains everything they say and do. It hangs on their office walls.
Irving Janis was a Psych professor at Yale (ring a bell). He researched groupthink and developed eight groupthink behaviors. I recast them a little below as commandments of the progressive left.
I
Thou shalt create an illusion of invulnerability shared by most members to foster excessive optimism and encourage extreme risks taking
II
Thou shall not allow any member to question the groups inherent morality, instead members shall be encouraged to ignore the ethical or moral consequences of their decisions
III
Thou shalt promote collective efforts to rationalize in order to discount warnings, or other information that might lead members to reconsider their assumptions before they recommit themselves to their assumptions
IV
Thou shalt reinforce stereotyped views of enemy leaders as too evil to warrant genuine attempts to negotiate, or as too weak and stupid to counter whatever risky attempts are made to defeat their purpose
V
Thou shalt self-censor any deviation from the apparent group consensus, inclining each member to minimize the importance of their doubts and counterarguments
VI
Thou shalt create and maintain a shared illusion of unanimity concerning judgement conforming to the majority view
VII
Thou shalt apply direct pressure on any member who expresses strong arguments against any of the groups stereotypes, illusions, or commitments, making clear that this type of dissent is contrary to what is expected of all loyal members
VIII
Thou shalt appoint mindguards to protect the group from adverse information that might shatter their shared complacency about the effectiveness and morality of their decisions.
