If Palin runs for president: Her strengths won't be a lot of help
The Chicago Tribune ^ | September 12, 2010 | Steve Chapman

It turns out Sarah Palin left the governorship of Alaska for a better position. She's become king — King Midas, to be exact. Everything she touches turns to gold.

Her memoir, "Going Rogue," was the best-selling hardcover nonfiction volume of 2009. She's got a TV gig with Fox News that reportedly pays $1 million a year. She commands $100,000 for a speaking appearance.

But it's not all about the money. Palin has also become the fairy godmother of the Republican Party. In the Aug. 31 primaries, all five candidates she tapped with her wand came away victorious — including Joe Miller, who upset incumbent Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska. Those she passed over turned into pumpkins.

"Sarah Palin has special medicine," wrote John Dickerson of the liberal online magazine Slate after the primaries. "The Palin brand now grows ever stronger because other Republicans will want to access that magic."

All that looks like the perfect prelude to something even bigger. After steadfastly refusing invitations for political gatherings in Iowa, site of the first presidential contest in 2012, she's going to Des Moines on Sept. 17 for the Republican Party's annual Reagan Day dinner. To run for president, one local GOP official was quoted saying, "She needs to be here — and she's doing that with a big, high-profile event."

If she enters the race, Palin will have the inside track. A recent Gallup poll found that among Republican voters, she's more popular than Abraham Lincoln, with a 76 percent favorable rating — higher than any other potential GOP presidential candidate listed by Gallup. The nomination is starting to look like it's hers for the asking.

But appearances are deceiving.(continued)

I have other things to attend to like why the state tea party chose Dan Maes for Governor.

He has been caught in many lies and exaggerations(more lies).

I'm worried why the Republican party is filing law suits against
Tom Tancredo and not convincing Maes to drop out.

Also why the county republication party chose a woman for County Clerk who just got a DUI.

My congressman is an incumbent and a staunch conservative.

Ken Buck should be able to beat Bennett

The DNC is blitzing the TV with lies about Ken Buck.

I had high hope for Sarah Palin.

She has disappointed me on a number of occasions.

Like her lack of leadership in her own family.

The final one was endorsing Juan McShame

And it’s disappointing to see how you come against one of His own. Satan is against Sarah, you picked the wrong side.
Free will in action.

You seem to lack discernment in more than one area.

I originally wished her well.

When she supports the Evil One incarnate Juan McShame, I draw the line.

Last time I checked, the Bible makes the man the head of the houshold. How can Mrs. Palin be a "leader" in her own family when Divine Scripture tells her not to? And what are you referring to, her daughter's pregnancy? To quote the Bible: So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, "He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her." John 8:7 (KJV)

Hmmm, she is set to run the table. Hadn't thought of the primary chronology. She could have all the momentum she needs coming out of South Carolina.

Nice.

Jesus drew the line. He’s in control not you. Use your free will and it’s NOT from Him. Sarah is one of His and no devil in hell with touch her with their venom. Remember the comments you made about her upthread - He knew them before you wrote them. OUT of the HEART the mouth speaks. You said enough to see what’s in your heart and ‘originally’ doesn’t wash.

And DON’T YOU tell me what gifts I DON’T have. Lay down your righteous clock - because it is transparent and DOESN’T hide a thing. You exposed yourself perfectly as He wanted.

GO SARAH!! Stomp on evil that has come against you.

Understanding you query was probably rhetorical - Per polling results, Palin is actually more popular, though not by too much, than Reagan was in 1978. Only after the New Hampshire debate ("I paid for this microphone") did Reagan begin to pull away from Bush. Yet, Reagan still lagged behind Jimmy Carter.
Note that many of the same, derisive things said about Reagan, oft from the mouths of those in the GOP along with the Democrats, are now being used against Sarah Palin.

This article by Chapman is pure bovine feces. I have no intention of wasting my time worrying about it or engaging in the usual circular arguments and flame wars with the Palin bashers on this thread that won’t change anyone’s opinion about Palin anyway.

“If Palin couldn’t handle an interview with Katie Couric, how would she handle debates”

Wrong, Mr. Chapman. Palin did quite well in the debate with Clueless Joe Biden. She did well in her debates while campaigning for governor in Alaska.

I’ll bet the next time she has a Katie-gotcha-type interview, she’ll do fine indeed.

Sorry, Mr. Chapman. As a libertarian, you clearly don’t like social conservatives. You think they are dumb and hypocritical. Go ahead and say it.

So Mrs. Boxer is better in the Senate than Mrs. Fiorino? Same for Ayotte.

That's not the question. The question should be was Fiorino and is Ayotte the conservative candidates in the primary? The answer is no.

Palin has made her name railing against Obama, congressional Democrats, mosque-builders, the news media and other conservative targets.
...she'd have to explain why she would be preferable to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty or former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, among other possible contenders.

Mr Chapman has done the explaining for her by stating one of her two strongest cases: there hasn't been anyone since Reagan who skewers the libtards like Palin.

Case number two: like Reagan, she has a track record as a good, effective, and popular chief executive as Governor of her state.

You like DeMint?

He went for Moran and Rossi. Not the true conservatives by any stretch either. And Tiahrt could have won if DeMint hadn’t gotten involved.

At least when Palin endorsed Ayotte and Fiorina the leaders in the primaries at that time were liberal RINOS, and the conservatives like DeVore had very little chance of winning.

So maybe to prove yourself as someone that should be taken seriously, you should embark on a DeMint bashing fest for a few months as well?

You like DeMint?

I like aspects of him.

He went for Moran and Rossi. Not the true conservatives by any stretch either. And Tiahrt could have won if DeMint hadn’t gotten involved.

I live in Kansas and know both Tiahrt and Moran. Moran is a true conservative, as is Tiahrt. I happen to think that the better candidate won, and that Moran would have won regardless of DeMint's endorsement.

At least when Palin endorsed Ayotte and Fiorina the leaders in the primaries at that time were liberal RINOS, ...

You honestly consider either Ayotte or Fiorino a conservative? We must have different definitions of the term.

...and the conservatives like DeVore had very little chance of winning

That's what they said about Nikki Haley. Had Palin gotten behind the conservative candidate rather than the moderate then who knows if they would have won or not?

So maybe to prove yourself as someone that should be taken seriously, you should embark on a DeMint bashing fest for a few months as well?

I criticized DeMint for his late and patently opportunistic jumping on the O'Donnell bandwagon. Something Palin is guilty of as well.

You mean like when she endorsed McCain and Fiorino and Ayotte?

McCain she had to endorse, she was his running mate for crying out loud.
Fiorina she endorsed to eliminate the RINO from a 3-person race. Carly is not a RINO by the way.
Kelly Ayotte is a conservative.

I guess Palin's endorsements of O'Donnell, Rand Paul, Clint Didier, and other conservatives were chopped liver?
