If Palin runs for president: Her strengths won't be a lot of help
The Chicago Tribune ^ | September 12, 2010 | Steve Chapman

Posted on 09/11/2010 1:25:26 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

It turns out Sarah Palin left the governorship of Alaska for a better position. She's become king — King Midas, to be exact. Everything she touches turns to gold.

Her memoir, "Going Rogue," was the best-selling hardcover nonfiction volume of 2009. She's got a TV gig with Fox News that reportedly pays $1 million a year. She commands $100,000 for a speaking appearance.

But it's not all about the money. Palin has also become the fairy godmother of the Republican Party. In the Aug. 31 primaries, all five candidates she tapped with her wand came away victorious — including Joe Miller, who upset incumbent Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska. Those she passed over turned into pumpkins.

"Sarah Palin has special medicine," wrote John Dickerson of the liberal online magazine Slate after the primaries. "The Palin brand now grows ever stronger because other Republicans will want to access that magic."

All that looks like the perfect prelude to something even bigger. After steadfastly refusing invitations for political gatherings in Iowa, site of the first presidential contest in 2012, she's going to Des Moines on Sept. 17 for the Republican Party's annual Reagan Day dinner. To run for president, one local GOP official was quoted saying, "She needs to be here — and she's doing that with a big, high-profile event."

If she enters the race, Palin will have the inside track. A recent Gallup poll found that among Republican voters, she's more popular than Abraham Lincoln, with a 76 percent favorable rating — higher than any other potential GOP presidential candidate listed by Gallup. The nomination is starting to look like it's hers for the asking.

But appearances are deceiving.(continued)

When was the last time you were a campaign advance man in the first in the nation caucus state? When was the last time you worked as an intelligence analyst for Presidents Carter and Reagan? When was the last time you raised over $40,000 for a presidential campaign sitting on your behind?
When was the last time you were given an “Eagle R” GOP lapel pin (reserved for major donors) for your bundling?

Do these writers even have brain cells, or are their brains filled with oatmeal? I mean, if you don’t like Palin, just say so instead of concocting some fairy tale.

Right. They have to pretend that their personal preference is part of the objective reality of the universe. Kind of like a 2-year-old.

Nothing like a PDS thread on a beautiful Saturday in September...and more lame arguments from a Palin-basher.

When was the last time you worked as an intelligence analyst for Presidents Carter and Reagan?

That is a strange job.

Both Carter and Reagan ?

And they both knew about you ?

I don't think Palin could go from campaigning as VP for McCain and turn around a short while later and refuse to endorse him in Arizona. On the one hand she is committed to help him be President and then on the other she snubs him in Arizona...? That's not realistic.

Of course you are right. And anyone who fails to see that is politically challenged.

I was asked to run at one time and I declined after talking with a number of experienced politicians.

You may not believe it but politicians do work together to get each other elected. McCain has been particularly good at this over the years, giving endorsements when needed and cash.

Sarah’s political moves have impressed me a great deal, she has a first rate political mind.

Thanks, didn’t see that before. That’s SARAH. Just another of her conservative values showing. she gave up frills that was allowed her as governor to save Alaska money.

I can see MANY change$ to our gov’t “IF” she decides to run.

For almost every one on this thread, politics is a spectator sport.

If she were serious about a White House bid, she would have spent the past two years making herself plausible as president. All Palin has done is make herself a major media phenomenon, as well as a wealthy woman.

What the hell does Chapman think has been happening? Palin isn't popular or wealthy because she winks and wrote a book. She is popular because of her resume. She continues to be popular because she has inserted herself into the issues of the day. Sarah Palin has been on the cutting edge of defining Obama, the WOT, energy, the oil spill, health care and the 2010 primaries. Can her detractors name another potential candidate that has done as much?

Chapman and the rest of the "intellectual elite" believe they are the smartest people in the room and anyone who doesn't kowtow to their superiority are stupid. Well Stephen, I'm here to tell you that Palin is and represents the true intellectuals in the country. That would be all the unnamed Americans that truly make this the greatest country in the history of the world. The same ones who have to overcome and work around all the problems you "intellectual elites" place in our paths.

Well, if 2nd Division Vet’s vita isn’t enough for you, you should see mine...but you’re not going to. My supposition is that he didn’t exactly go in to detail, either.

IN YOUR EYES ONLY. You are unable to see what is right in front of you and your lack of common sense is showing!

If we where into spectator sports, we would be sitting back watching Barry as he burns our country to the ground.

So enough of you trashing Conservatives!
