It Could Have Been Worse Is Not A Defense For Bad Policy

Politics and Proving Negatives It could have been worse. The stimulus saved us from another great depression, right? Unemployment wouldn't go over 8 percent, but when it did, it could have been worse. Second quarter growth in 2010 slowed to 1.6 percent, but it could have been worse. In July home sales dropped 27.2 percent, and for new homes it dropped 12.4 percent, but it could have been worse. The stimulus was going to create millions of jobs, but then it just saved millions of jobs, but it could have been worse.

Does anyone else feel duped? This administration has failed to meet any of their expected targets on economic policy but the response is always the same. There are really only two options. Their economic policies failed, or they massively underestimated the state of the economy multiple times over a year and a half. Neither option inspires confidence.

Look at unemployment rising to 9.6 percent this month. Far off the bar set during elections times, but the reason is the administration didn't realize how bad it really was. Is that a valid excuse? Isn't part of instituting economic policy knowing what the state of the economy is? Does it breed confidence to know the administration didn't know how bad things are, or does it breed confidence to know that the policy was ineffective? These are terrible options, but what we hear from Democrats is that, it could have been worse.

The stimulus bill was going to get the economy back on track but the economy still isn't gaining enough jobs to stay even. To address this lack of success the administration created a new metric called “jobs saved.” This leaves me with no doubt that in the Clinton and Reagan administrations nothing short of eleventy billion jobs were saved. I can say that with certainty, knowing that the statistic is completely immeasurable. You simply cannot prove me wrong.

This administration has claimed success in every circumstance on the unprovable, what might have been. How bad is it now? It would have been worse. They have fallen short by their own standards in every bar they have set and created metrics to absolve themselves of their own ineptitude. This is all at the cost of the American public. If ignorance is bliss, I'll have a double shot.

Sorry, but you can't drink at this bar! It is a "member's only" club made up of only the elite, party leaders (please note: this is NOT a Democrats only club, although they are 95+ percent of the patronage)!!

Yeah it could be worse.

It could also be better, which is what Team Obama promised. And which might have been achievable, had some experienced leaders been in charge.

Obama couldn’t lead his way out of a wet paper bag.

I don’t know why no one has figured it out. Everything that is Obama is working exactly as planned.

Even though it is a bar, I imagine they serve mostly kool-aid.
