Re last sentence: touchy subject in this part of the world

LOL. Yes, the Monarchy does seem more important to those 'down-under' than it is to most people in Canada. It's probably because we are so melded with the US identity.

& she is a very fine lady.

We could debate that sometime.....lol. She is well bred, and gracious.

Thanks for the introduction, Civ.

There are multiple issues in oz regarding Monarchy. As examples, most staunch Monarchists here appear to be older generation Australians of English heritage & their children (not as many from Irish, Welsh or non Anglo-celtic backgrds). Many monarchists also argue that Monarchy has so far given us “stability”, so why change the system.

Personally, I’m not a monarchist, and would prefer to have an Australian head of state than a British one. But, if/when we do change the current system, we’ve to ensure that we get the new model & constitution right, and of course the majority of people agree to it - that is the key.

My take is that prince Charles is not half as popular here as the Queen. Some even prefer prince William to take over from the Queen instead of Charles.

That is my understanding as well. I’ve got very good Canadians friends both from BC & Alberta. They also tell me that the other, perhaps more minor reason, could be the French influence in Canada.
