Harman to hold "remote town hall" on health care

Most Democrats seeking election in November seem to be distancing themselves from the health reform bill passed by Congress last spring, but South Bay Rep. Jane Harman isn't among them.

So the veteran lawmaker this week will hold a town hall meeting of sorts - constituents will have to dial in to a teleconference to speak with Harman in Washington, D.C. - to highlight aspects of the law that took effect Thursday.

"I supported the law, and I'm happy to defend the law," Harman said. "This is when people are paying attention, so I think the timing is perfect in explaining the substance of the law to people. I think they're more interested today than they were six months ago."

Though she is in the South Bay this weekend, Harman said the forum was scheduled for Wednesday and she had to be in Washington for a legislative session.

Hence, the remote version of a town hall.

"This is a way of doing these things that has proved to be very successful," said the eight-term Democrat of the style of the event, which will be run like a large teleconference in which constituents can submit questions in advance or ask questions live.

Harman took some flak last winter for not holding a town hall when the Patient Protection and Affordability Act was attracting angry crowds at public forums held around the country to promote and explain the legislation.

Harman said that instead of hosting a forum while the law was being considered, she consulted with a "medicine cabinet" of South Bay health experts, hospital officials, doctors and others.

"I have had regular contact with individual constituents ... who have reviewed issues with me and have counseled me," she said.

Harman is my rep, which is why I am posting this.

She "ducked" everyone last year on the healthcare debate, and now I think that she's running scared again.

Is anyone else's rep having a "remote town hall" meeting?

People have quit wasting time calling and going to their meetings or even writing them. We will oust them in november.

Our rep (Meloncon) has had these ‘remote town hall’ meetings.

THEY ARE A WASTE OF TIME.

In point of fact, there is no real way to know if the ‘remote’ town hall is LIVE.

I don’t need to sit through an hours worth of lies.

You press the button to talk and all you do is wait. They have know way of letting you know where you are in line or anything. I have never gotten through to be able to answer a question, so I have not bothered taking the last few he has given.

I have been debating TAPING the alleged ‘town hall’ and posting it on youtube with the appropriate ‘comments’ thrown in that we were not allowed to get in.

Is that the same Jane Harman who just bought Newsweak?

I wonder how they'll cover her campaign.

What “stinks” is that she is holding this on a weekday, and at a time when most people are at work.

These folks are too chicken to stand in front of the people and explain their actions.

The advantage of remote town hall meetings is that if things get too hot, a “technology malfunction” can suddenly appear to knock everyone off the line. Whoops! Oh, well...

No, the advantage is they can TAPE the entire thing, they can get their shills to ask the questions ahead of time, they can practice answering the question multiple times and pick the best answers...

and the ‘audience’ does not know that they are doing any of this.
