Democrat Jane Harman Profits From Firm Outsourcing California Jobs Overseas
The American Spectator ^ | Oct. 3 2010 | Robert Stacy McCain

California Democrat Rep. Jane Harman's family business is laying off American workers - including engineering employees in California - and shifting jobs overseas.

A letter from the human resources director of one Harman company, obtained exclusively by The American Spectator, describes a "permanent" layoff of dozens of California workers that went into effect last week.

"I am writing to inform you that Harman Consumer, Inc. has decided to consolidate their global engineering operations located at 8500 Balboa Boulevard, Northridge, California 91329, to Shenzhen, China," Sandra Buchanan wrote in the letter dated July 20. "The separation is expected to be on September 30, 2010 and will affect forty-eight (48) employees. . . . The layoffs are expected to be permanent . . . ."

By May 2009, the company had already slashed its U.S. workforce by 900 and expected to make more than a thousand more layoffs by mid-2010, according to a Saturday Evening Post article that noted: "[W]hile shutting down U.S. facilities, Harman was simultaneously opening factories in China and India, as well as massive multimedia outlets in Dubai and New Delhi."

Sidney Harman recently purchased Newsweek magazine. His wife is seeking re-election in California's 36th District, which has been hit hard by the current recession. Mrs. Harman's Republican challenger, Mattie Fein, has been harshly critical of the incumbent's record on economic issues. One of the main newspapers in the district, the Torrance Daily Breeze, has said it is "not interested" in covering the GOP candidate.

The definition of smug ... if we can get Whitman into office and get the right redistricting, we have a shot if we can’t bring her down now..

This phony Lap Dog Democrat is my Congresswoman. Ever since the Dem Assembly moved the borders of her district west into poor areas like Wilmington and parts of Carson and Compton, it’s become a safe district for the Dems. They took away the more affluent areas in Palos Verdes and gave that to Dana Roherbacher if you can believe it who is way down in Orange County. They did this by connecting a thin coastal strip through Long Beach and San Pedro with Rohrbacher’s district in the OC. That’s how ridiculous the last gerrymander was. We’ve GOT to get that ballot Prop. passed for redistricting reform. I forget the number at the moment.

The Dems have made California an impossible place to do business. They’ll sell themselves all day long as the party of the working man as they wreck the place and make it impossible to do business there. She can’t even keep her business going in California, she’s joining the exodus of companies that her party has caused.

So, I wonder how many Dem politicians will sell themselves as being for the working man? All of them? And how many newly unemployed will vote Democrat this next election? Most of them? Because heaven help us if the Repubs get control in Sacramento, they might cut taxes or something.

I worked for a supplier to the Northridge plant on Balboa ~2000-2003. It was the worst account on my book to deal with. The culture was rank from the top down.

And this is exactly what Boxer’s campaign ads are saying about Fiorina. Talk about hypocrisy.

Hmm, wonder where the Liberal uprising is towards her? You know, like they are doing to Fiorina?

I’d love to see Harman defeated, but this piece on consolidating overseas operations is just dumb.

Corporations have no duty to keep jobs in an environment that is unfavorable and unprofitable to them from a tax and regulatory point of view.

If we want jobs to be in the U.S., we have to make it profitable for jobs to be done here. That may not be possible in all cases because of global competition, but that’s one reason why it’s more important than ever to stay out of the way of small businesses.

“Corporations have no duty to keep jobs in an environment that is unfavorable and unprofitable to them from a tax and regulatory point of view.”

You mean it has nothing to do with cheap labor and tax provisions that actually encourage “globalization?”

True,

But Harman (D) has not exactly been helping that along, either for the US or CA...

No, that's exactly what I DO mean.

U.S. tax and regulatory policies have to shown some understanding of what global competition means.
