* Poll shows most Democrats support legalization

* Republicans strongly against, independents divided

* Prop. 19 would let local governments regulate sales

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct 5 (Reuters) - Hopes that California will become the first state in the nation to legalize marijuana appear to be turning into a pipe dream.

Voters plan to oppose a measure on the Nov. 2 ballot to legalize marijuana use by 53 percent to 43 percent, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Tuesday that showed a big change of sentiment from June. [ID:nN05207672]

And for months the media was telling us legalization was a done deal.

The ‘RATS only put this pothead crap on the ballot to get their morons to the polls. They’re pulling the same crap here in Arizona.

People, i suppose, have realized that the details were never ironed out and the many unexpected implications would be worse than whatever “problem” they were trying to “solve”

As would I.

I don’t understand how someone squares being against marijuana being legal, but are perfectly fine with alcohol being legal at the same time.

If some adult wants to smoke a dried out plant in the privacy of their own home, why should anyone give a damn?

Disclaimer: No... I DON’T use it!

Companies and Business owners will still be able to drug test their employees.

As an Air Traffic Controller, we got tested all of the time.

Just as there was an 8 hour time period between having a drink and going to work.

People are going to smoke it anyway and this will get rid of the criminal element.

If they legalize pot, the cops will no longer be able to kick people's doors down, put grandma on the floor in handcuffs, and kill all the dogs in the house.

What is the fun in that?

Funny thing here in Cal......the Police actually want it legalized and the Pot Growers don’t!!!!

When/if it is legalized the price will go down and the growers will loose profit and the Cops won’t have to deal with busting people for pot.

Here's the synopsis of a recent debate I had with a pro-Legalization pal:

Him: They need to legalize marijuana and tax the hell out of it!

Me: How can you effectively tax an underground market? It would be like taxing garage sales. It's not going to generate a thin dime more legitimate revenue than the illicit business does now.

Him: It would if you had to pay tax on it at the supermarket! Just like beer and cigarettes, man!

Me: Why would anyone go to the supermarket for high tax marijuana when it's perfectly legal to fill your backyard with more hydroponic marijuana that you could possibly smoke? You can't accomplish that with tobacco or home brewed beer. Try as hard as you want, and you'll never make a drinkable single malt Scotch or have enough land and agreeable conditions to grow tobacco.

Him: Well then how would you raise revenue for the state with marijuana, huh?

Me: Increase the fines for it if you get caught in possession from $100 to $1000...

Considering how much money George Soros has pumped into the pro-legalization initiatives over the years, I’m absolutely AMAZED the pro-legalization forces appear to be coming up short.

"Companies and Business owners will still be able to drug test their employees."

The unfortunate thing about the reliability of testing for Marijuana is the metabolite they test for remains in your system for weeks. Someone could have smoked it two weeks ago, test positive for it, no longer be under the influence, and still lose their jobs as a result. For dismissal, a positive test should accompany a person with bloodshot eyes. lol

For me, the issue is not about the State being able to tax it and bring in more revenue.

It would be hard for them to tax all of it just like they don’t tax you for growing Tomatoes in your backyard, yet you pay tax on it when you buy it at a grocery store.

BTW....they already tax it at Legal Pot Clinics and people are allowed to grow it with a Medical Card. They are taking in tax revenue at this very moment.

LOL!

That "tax the hell out of it" line always cracks me up. Now we've got the IRS involved. We'll be putting them in jail for tax evasion. LOL!

I agree that it stays in your system for quite a while and testing is not a perfect solution. IMHO, there never will be a perfect system other than you as an employee taking responsibility and not wanting to loose your job.

Drug testing is not perfect for Opiates either as you can have a false positive from various things that you eat.

And BTW.....there is a cutoff level in the testing.

This should help Carly Fiorina and Meg Whitman. Republicans are more socially conservative. If they get inspired to come out and vote against legalizing weed, while they’re there, they may as well go ahead and vote....vote Republican.

“If some adult wants to smoke a dried out plant in the privacy of their own home, why should anyone give a damn?”

Because many people won’t just smoke it in the privacy of their own homes. They will be drinking, toting and driving.

So? It's already illegal to drink and drive. It would also be illegal to smoke the stuff and drive. That issue is with the individual. They are probably eating and texting while driving too! lol

My grandmother grew her own chewing tobacco, but I read that it is the complicated and exacting growing conditions, drying conditions, and processing that keeps people from being able to make homegrown smoking tobacco.

Tobacco is a refined product, not just something to endure for the buzz. It is very difficult to duplicate a Marlboro.
