North Korea Debuts an IRBM

By joshua | 10 October 2010 | No Comments

After a long wait, North Korea’s “Musudan” intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) has made its first public appearance. Described as a copy of the Soviet R-27 submarine-launched ballistic missile (a.k.a. RSM-25, a.k.a. SS-N-6, a.k.a. Serb), it has never been flight-tested in North Korea, as far as anyone knows.

The missile showed up in the course of a televised military parade in Pyongyang’s Kim Il Sung square, better noted elsewhere for the joint appearance of ailing North Korean ruler Kim Jong Il and his son and successor Kim Jong Un. Compare this image of the nosecone on the right — a closeup from Anatoly Zak’s photo of an R-27 in a museum — to the glimpse of a pair of missiles at 0:49 in this video from North Korean television:

Another view appears at 1:12 in this video:

Much cheaper that way.

To summarize, the TV show “Stargate SG-1” showed weaponry far superior to any known Earth weapons. Of course, SG-1 is scifi. Perhaps NK is also into dummy props.

Not to mention, radar systems (on mobile platforms) never before thought to have been possessed by the DPRK == but now clearly known they have them, unless they were wood mock ups. Japanese military specialists, tonight on Japanese TV news, along with the footage.

Parading a fancily decorated empty metal tube in front of State run television cameras is one thing, and proving the design and flight operability of a multi-stage intermediate range missile is quite another.

None of the grand standing by the NoKos will change as long as Kim Jong Ding Dong is still Dictator, and no matter how many stars he gives Kim Jong Flounder to wear on his crisp new uniforms, until someone sequesters Il’s personal carbon the Lessor Kim will have to play along with the old man along with the rest of the Country.

Personally, I think the kid will fold (or be folded...) shortly after his old man assumes room temp. I don’t think the kid is his Daddy’s kind of Stalinist Dictator, and there are too many ruthless little bastards in the NoKo Military who will not go quietly. That’s always been the Achilles Heel of these Regimes, is that you need so many people who are more ruthless than you are to carry out your will. Eventually, many of them get ambitious, and none are willingly going to give up what perks they have just because the role of Fearless Leader changes every now and then...

I give the kid six months on his own, tops.

Uh huh, right.

If it's real at all, it's probably a repainted Iranian Al Shebop or whatever.

Almost certainly a reel-to-reel movie camera. The few outsiders who have been to North Korea described the capital city, Pyongyang, as being stuck in the 1970s. The rest of the country is far behind even that.

yep...and then what?...that’s the multi-millions of deaths question. I believe when the North finally does collapse it will be the biggest humanitarian disaster to hit Asia since the Japanese Empire collapsed. We could easily see the Military shooting civilians over food...

They are already doing that.

But on a much smaller scale.

NK also has lots of well-paved, modern highways, but hardly any cars. Very strange.

Maybe for military use? IIRC that was what Eisenhower had in mind when he conceived the interstate system. NK has always placed a premium on military preparedness at the expense of civilian comfort and convenience.
