WASHINGTON — Attorney General Eric Holder says the federal government will enforce its marijuana laws in California even if the state's voters approve a ballot measure to legalize the drug.

Holder says the Justice Department strongly opposes California's Proposition 19 and remains firmly committed to enforcing the federal Controlled Substances Act in all states.

"We will vigorously enforce the CSA against those individuals and organizations that possess, manufacture or distribute marijuana for recreational use, even if such activities are permitted under state law," Holder wrote.

This is interesting to me, because a medical marijuana
initiative is on the ballot here in Arizona.

Will California assert her state’s rights to defy The One? How far will The One and his minions go to stifle rights of Californians?

If only there was a Bay of San Francisco or something where they could have an incident, the pretext for some kind of invasion or something.

if you legalized pot it would kill alot of drug dealers around here. They’d have to switch to harder stuff where the competition tends to be much more .... ah dangerous.

This will likely end up in the Supreme Court.

>”We will vigorously enforce the CSA against those individuals and organizations that possess, manufacture or distribute marijuana for recreational use, even if such activities are permitted under state law,”

Meanwhile he, and virtually every other member of the Federal Government fail to remember that in order for the restriction of Alcohol [Prohibition] to be valid a CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT was needed.

It therefore stands to reason that the Federal Government is acting contrary to the Constitution in its National illegalization of drugs.

What a target-rich environment for the Feds! Fish in a barrel. They’ll have to turn all the Fed land in Nevada into a prison camp!

Bet he still won’t go after illegals, though.

I have mixed feelings about this. I agree with California as a “State’s Rights” issue. I’m not sure I agree with legalizing pot, though. It’s one of those things; if it fails there’s no way to put the Jeanie back in the bottle. It will be like enforcing prohibition after booze was legal for two hundred years.

I have every confidence that the Supreme Court will act in an arrogant & lawless manner regardless of the facts of the case: see post #7.

I agree with you. The Feds hate competition and there is too much at stake in keeping pot vilified. Follow the money.

I hope it gets there and we have as a nation the Constitutional discussion we need to be having to prevent this tyranny by the Fed.

I believe this Obama/Holder DOJ enforces only the laws they agree with, they ignore some laws and out and out break others.

Suppose prop 19 passes. Will you support CA's prerogative under the the Tenth Amendment to enact the program, or will you support fedgov's effort under the Commerce Clause to shut it down?

Why would a statist want to get rid of anything that ensures more statism? The WOD is the gift that keeps on giving to his ilk. Power, jobs, revenue and a criminal population that supports a whole industry.

Where exactly in Article 1, Section 8 is the authority given to Congress to regulate what Americans can or can not smoke?

I think the difference here is in the wording.

Recreational use has a criminal supply chain.

Medicinal use is a taxed and regulated supply chain.

Buy off the street = busted.

Buy from an authorized dispensary using a med card = relief from pain or whatever ails you but “not busted”.
