Disinheriting The Meek In Florida

Election '10: An effort to force a black Democrat out of Florida's U.S. Senate race in favor of a white former Republican shows the Democrats' desperation to keep Senate control. It also speaks to their hypocrisy on race.

As poll after poll suggests a tide of voter anger of almost biblical proportions will sweep Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her cadre of uberliberals out of control of the House of Representatives, eyes turn to the Senate where Majority Leader Harry Reid finds himself in peril and the majority he leads hangs in the balance.

Leading the Tea Party-inspired populist revolt is Florida Senate candidate Marco Rubio, who has risen from relative obscurity to drive Obama-hugging Gov. Charlie Crist out of the Republican Party of which he was a nominal member. Crist decided to run as an independent, making it a three-way race likely to lead to a GOP win.

The Democratic Senate candidate is African-American Rep. Kendrick Meek, who was thought not to have much of a chance in a Republican year. As Politico first reported, former President Clinton, while campaigning last week in Florida, tried to talk Meek into quitting. The congressman denied he agreed to drop out and endorse Crist, but didn't deny the offer itself.

The Obama White House is said to have had knowledge of the effort. The theory was that in a two-way race, core Democrats would flock to Crist, who would then be able to beat Rubio, a rising star, and keep Senate control in the hands of the Democrats.

I don’t think it’ll work, I think still gets the “black vote”. He will get at least 10%, probably more.

What is funny about this whole thing is if all the Democrats would have fully supported Meek from the start, this race would have been a lot closer. The fact that many liberals decided so early on they would vote for Crist pretty much sank any chance of them beating Rubio.

The first time I read about Meeks being in the race, the article indicated that Democrats weren't excited about their candidate. Apparently he's done nothing to change their minds for the better.

Florida is a funny state; Democrats outnumber Republicans but either vote for Republicans or sit out elections, as we've been having a mostly Republican-run state for a while now.

An interesting aside, found this at http://www.city-data.com/states/Florida-Political-parties.html (emphasis mine) :

Aided from 1889 to 1937 by a poll tax, which effectively disfranchised most of the state's then predominantly Republican black voters, the Democrats won every gubernatorial election but one from 1876 through 1962; the Prohibition Party candidate was victorious in 1916.

This alone really boggles the mind as to why so many blacks are Democrats. Add all the rest and one can only wonder at the brainwashing that seems to have taken place since the early 60s.

Meek could say that he would caucus with the Republicans. That would suppress his support.

Meek seems like a nice guy not like Crist who is a prick.

Yet another African-American thrown under the DNC bus.

Better under it than in the back of it.

Meek inherited his seat from his mother. They are a semi Miami Dem dynasty and are corrupt. Meek is far less creepy than Crist.

What is weird is I think the large block of Dem Jewish voters were not energized by Meek. Obama was made into a rock star and they love him. I do not understand their psychology but I think Meek would have pulled 35%.

Rubio is seen by some whites as Mel Martinez 2. A lot of southern whites in the states do not trust Cuban Americans. Martinez did not help matters especially when he was the GOP point man for amnesty.
