PHILLY DEMOCRATS SUNK JOE SESTAK
Philadelphia Magazine ^ | 8 Nov 2010 | Chris Freind

Hours after the polls closed, the nation still didn’t know who would become Pennsylvania’s junior senator, as Republican Pat Toomey and Democratic Congressman Joe Sestak were locked in a back-and-forth duel, a race too close to call.

Finally victorious, Toomey thanked his supporters, of course, but he should have also thanked those most responsible for his success: Philadelphia Democrats.

It was the relatively light turnout in the city that killed Sestak’s candidacy. Based on the 77,000 vote statewide margin — out of 3.9 million cast — if just one of ten more Philadelphians voted, Sestak’s election would have been a lay-up.

Sestak and Corbett had better fix their "Philadelphia problem" or they are one termers for certain.

Probably his supporters in Philly were too busy pimping, selling drugs, and robbing people to show up at the polls.

Sestak may have won if this were 2012 and a certain Philadelphia demographic was coming out to vote for the man at the top of the ticket. Fortunately they stayed home this year

politically this is the same problem Washington state voters have. King County -just like Philly- kills Republicans statewide and because of the entrenchment of the democratic machines is very hard to overcome. When the turnout is high in those areas it makes a Republican victory very tough.

A friend of mine told me that his grandfather never voted for a Democrat until after he died.

I don’t think Philly cost Sestak the election. His margin of victory was over 284K in the city, which is comparable to Bob Casey’s margin in 2006 (289K) when he beat Rick Santorum. The difference was in the collar counties around Philly and in Western PA. Sestak only won two of the collar counties (Delaware and Montgomery) while Toomey won the other two (Chester and Bucks). Toomey also flipped 11 Western PA counties that had voted for Bob Casey in 2006, including Beaver, Washington, and Westmoreland counties. Sestak underperformed in the swing counties of the state, which leads me to believe he was viewed as too liberal by many Democrats and independents.

That's Toomey, sestak is now a retired Admiral and 2 term congress critter.

But, in terms of the next Presidential election, the electoral college can be fixed.

Change the electoral college vote distribution from winner take all, to, 2 votes for the overall state winner and then the rest {19} distributed by winner of congress critter district.

That would mean, that in PA, the demonRATs would get 5-6 votes and the pubbies would get 15-16,every time we had a Presidential election.

If my aunt were a man she’d be my uncle... actually I don’t have any aunts or uncles but you know what I mean.

The real key was we here in Bucks county voted Republican for a change as did Chester county. Nothing we can do about Philadelphia, but if the trend continues in the Republican direction in the collar counties we can gain even more ground in 2012.

Yeah but what was it for Obama in 2008--Casey comes up again in 2012 same as Obama

Excellent idea. We will be down to 18 congressional districts in 2012. Michigan and Wisconsin will also lose a seat. Coincidentally, all three of us elected GOP governors and legislatures, so all of us should implement this system a.s.a.p.

Not only will it reduce the payoff for voter fraud, but it will improve the chances of other candidates in statewide races.

Best of all, it changes the entire presidential calculus. The RATs cannot win without Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan.

To be honest, in a close race like this EVERY single demographic can be made to look like they were part of the winning or losing margin.

“If 20 percent more left-handed smokers would have voted, my candidate would have won!”

I’ve never voted for a Democrat; however, I did get fooled by Ross Perot.
