Krakatau’s Crater Expands; Eruption Frequency Increases (aka Krakatoa)
The Jakarta Globe ^ | November 09, 2010 | staff

Cinangka, Banten. The crater of Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait has expanded to a diameter of 25-26 meters, an Indonesian volcanologist says.

The news comes as the frequency of eruptions of the volcano, once misidentified as Krakatoa, increases: On Friday there were 615 eruptions, on Saturday 623 eruptions, and on Sunday 668.

Anton S Pambudi, a official from Banten province monitoring the eruptions, said the eruptions over the past two weeks had changed the shape of the crater.

He said the team would continue to monitor the volcano.

Banten Governor Ratu Atut Chosiyah said she believed that Anak Krakatau did not pose a threat and that the eruptions, which can be seen from the western tip of Java Island, were interesting to observe.

Krakatoa exploded in 1883, with the resulting tsunamis killing an estimated 40,000 people.

Authorities have warned that several other volcanoes in Indonesia are showing increased signs of activity. These include Mount Karangetang on Siau Island in North Sulawesi and Mount Ibu on Halmahera Island in North Maluku.

If this blows up in 2012 we'll never hear the end of it from Coast to Coast.

...once misidentified as Krakatoa...

??? This is a whole different volcano??? Can't they tell them apart? Or do they mean 'formerly called Krakatoa'?

Don't the indonesians have, like, the TALLEST BUILDING IN THE WORLD now?

That will be a sight if the "scientists" dropped a decimal somewhere.

Anak Krakatau means “Son of Krakatoa”.

There has always been a volatile volcano at that spot and there probably always will be. It is only a matter of time until this one blows just as spectacularly and deadly as Krakatoa was. That spot is where several tectonic plates come together and create a permanent flaw or hot spot in the earth’s mantle. It takes hundreds of years for the cycle, but that volcano blows itself to smithereens and then rebuilds only to blow all over again years later.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krakatoa
(Indonesian: Krakatau), often mispelled Krakatoa, is a volcanic island made of a’a lava in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra in Indonesia. The name is used for the island group, the main island (also called Rakata), and the volcano as a whole. The island exploded in 1883, killing approximately 40,000 people, although some estimates put the death toll much higher. The explosion is still considered to be the loudest sound ever heard in modern history, with reports of it being heard nearly 3,000 miles from its point of origin. The shock wave from the explosion was recorded on barographs around the globe.

The original Krakatoa volcano was destroyed in the massive 1883 eruption.

The new island, Anak Krakatau, means “Child of Krakatau” in Indonesian. Krakatau, not Krakatoa, is the proper name of the original volcano. Maybe that is what they were referring to in the article.

Krakatoa, Krautoau, Krackadoowa, Krackinass...?

This refusal to anglicize foreign words is so damn POLITICALLY CORRECT it has become a fad! Peiking is "BIEJING" ad nausium. When are they going to call Moscow "Muskva" as it is actually pronounced?

So if the original was destroyed, how in the world did they identify (even if mis-) THIS one as THAT one? Did they think it came back through a time warp?

You are way behind. The tallest building is in Dubai. The building of which you speak is on the mainland in Malaysia

I think what they are referring to is that Westerners misidentify Krakatau (the island next to Anak Krakatau) as Krakatoa.

Keep in mind this is a source from Jakarta.

One final note:

There is a book by Simon Winchester on the 1883 eruption of Krakatoa. It is just amazing and I highly recommend it. I can’t recall the title offhand.

The original Krakatoa completely collapsed and disintegrated in 1883, leaving a huge underwater caldera. In its place, a second volcano quickly rose up and was named "Son of Krakatoa."
