I challenge anyone to prove that real news existed.

(In the context stated)

It’s all opinion. Whether it come under a “opinion” or op/ed banner, or be it coming with a banner of “news”. That’s opinion too.

I wasn’t paying much attention at the time (because I was born in ‘70) but I’d venture a guess that the end of real news/journalism began with old Walt’s editorializing about Vietnam on the evening news.

You'd win. One of the way-stations down that detour was WR Hearst/Spanish-American War/Yellow Journalism. That is just the first one to come to mind.

Exactly so. The so-called “long-gone era of television journalism” being pined for never existed, and never will exist. It never existed in print, either.

On that note, I’ve seen a short history write up here on the rise of the fiction of “objective journalism” with the rise of the wire services. Does anyone know what I’m talking about, and have a link for it?
