The Real GOP of Philadelphia: Kevin Kelly
The Philadelphia Libertarian Examiner ^ | 29 Nov 2010 | Aaron Proctor

While the WikiLeaks story is rocking the world on an international scale, another troubling story rocks the Republican Party. We've covered the subject of the Philadelphia Republican Party's acts of downright corruption in the past few weeks. The person who spear-headed the dishonesty and formed his own group of loyal but dissident Conservatives is a man named Kevin Kelly. Kelly says he's just a "regular Philly guy who is lucky enough" to be the Chairman and founder of Loyal Opposition.

After Kelly had an arranged meeting with the leadership of Republican City Committee in 2003, it became obvious the mainstream had given up even the pretense of trying to win elections and build a viable Republican party in Philadelphia.

"Michael Meehan, current Legal Counsel of RCC and son of machine boss Billy Meehan and the grandson of party boss Austin Meehan now runs the city GOP as his own private patronage and personal enrichment program.", says Kelly. "...And here I thought we did away with monarchies a few hundred years ago. While this situation is great for Meehan personally, the citizens of Philadelphia suffer from myriad governmental dysfunctions without a practical two party system."

"We have a city that is on the precipice of destruction. The Detroit of the East coast. The responsibility for this not only rests with the Democrats, but with the very people who’ve enabled them for so long; Meehan and his cohorts.",

The RNC needs to do something about the "Philadelphia problem" or it will suffer the consequences.

Same problem out here in Pittsburgh. Local Republican Party filled with hangers-on who are only there because the Democrat job was taken. Many of them later flip when they get the opportunity. Those who don’t just cut backroom deals to take a dive in favor of John Murtha-types in exchange for a piece of the pork.

The Republican party of Philadelphia set the pattern for accommodation with the Democrats that became the national Republican Model.

The Meehan Machine traded opposition at the polls for patronage spoils (particularly within the court systems) within the city and county government, and a share of Federal monies coming to Philadelphia for "improvements," etc., through contracting arrangements.

They are indeed a "loyal opposition." That is, the Republican City Committee of Philadelphia and its environs is loyal to the Democrats.

The entire City of Philadelphia and its Jersey suburbs are corruption personified. Everybody knows somebody who can bribe Licensing and Inspection or get a ticket fixed. It’s a way of life. And it’s pathetic. Philly is a beautiful place to live, with lots of housing and transportation hubs near the main part of town, several universities, fantastic restaurants and markets, lots of cultural attractions and two rivers flowing through it, all within walking distance of City Hall in the center.

But what a sewer politically.

RINOs galore in the Philadelphia GOP party.

When I ran for office in 2004, even I was astounded by the amount of RINOs in the party. Aside from my Ward Leader who's as strong a Conservative as you could find, most of the others were simply people with nefarious political ambitions who thought the sparse competition in the R party would be a short cut to a position of power.

WOW, ONE man is the REAL GOP in Philadelphia? Better start registering some more REAL R's. : )

"The RNC needs to do something about the "Philadelphia problem" or it will suffer the consequences."

How geocentric. There are many places like Philadelphia, throughout the country for the RNC to focus upon, like almost the entire state of CA. The RNC's done just fine without Philadelphia for many years, including the last election, without suffering serious consequences. It can survive for many more.

Surprisingly, the PA GOP also did just fine without Philly this past November 2nd. One would think Mr. Kelly's help from Bob Gleason should suffice.

Pat Toomey won by a razor thin margin in a year in which he should have dominated. If you think that is “doing just fine”, then we disagree. As stated in the article, 2010 was an anomoly. If we can fix Philadelphia (by winning just 30% of the vote)Democrats will lose the state every time, and by extension, lose the presidential election. They must have PA to win. It is an achievable goal wihout Meehan. You seem to disagree. At least we are clear where we disagree.

Actually, increasing Republican registration throughout the counties across PA, would have the same effect. But Mr. Kelly is personally too vested in the wasteland and lost cause that is Philadelphia, and thus must keep grassroot attention there.

Stopping the situation from growing worse, i.e more democrats and less Republicans in the city, is possibly attainable. Attempts at greater gains, are an utter waste of resources.

However, other disagreements with Mr. Kelly, are at least equally as serious, and lie elsewhere.
