Chapel Hill, N.C. Elizabeth Edwards, the political wife whose public battle with breast cancer, coping with marital infidelity and continued advocacy for the downtrodden raised her profile above that of her husband, died Tuesday. She was 61.
Edwards died at her Chapel Hill home, where family and friends had gathered in recent days after doctors informed her that her cancer had spread and recommended that she not undergo further treatment.
Edwards was first diagnosed with cancer in the waning days of the 2004 presidential campaign, when her husband, then-U.S. Sen. John Edwards, was the Democratic nominee for vice president. The couple didn't disclose her illness until after the election.
The cancer went into remission after surgery and months of treatment, but it resurfaced in early 2007, as John Edwards was mounting a second run at the White House. The Edwardses agreed at the time that they wouldn't allow the cancer to derail his candidacy.
Because the cancer had moved into her bones, her doctors said at that time that it was no longer curable but could be treated.

“...I hope she didn’t go the way of Jackie O.”
What do you mean?
They announced yesterday she had weeks to live.It was fast.
My prayers for her and her children.
Lethal morphine injection...
RIP. Prayers for her children.
Oh, I didn’t know that Jackie O did that. Yikes!
RIP.
Her suffering is over, and she is in the hands of our Lord.
Yes, after she found out she was terminal...she had all the family come visit her and with a few by her side...she had the lethal morphine injected....
Interesting, I suspect my M-I-L did the same. How do you know about Jackie O?
Given the timing, it wouldn't shock me, I know it happens, probably much more than people would think.
Well, since you raised the subject, her decisions with regard to John’s political ambitions weren’t always as ethical as they could have been and, as a lawyer, she shared some tendencies toward ruthlessness characteristic of many lawyers. But there is every indication she was a good mother and accomplished some good things in her life.
As to her marriage, yes, John was a bad choice for a husband, to be sure. He is an indredibly disgusting POS. She could have done better...a lot better.
She certainly didn’t deserve the emotional and physical suffering that came her way.
May she RIP and may God give her children peace and comfort.
Eternal Rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her.
May her soul rest in peace.
Cancer may be the worst scourge of humankind.
I suspect Ted Kennedy did the same...
You're correct. He wasn't a good woman.
Elizabeth was quite the honey when she was younger, wasn't she? RIP
RIP, Elizabeth Edwards. May God comfort all who loved you.
Accidental, or deliberate? By her boyfriend, or her children, or her doctor?
She requested it...why would she have all her family come visit her first...this was her instructions...and it sounds just like Jackie O...
Following her death JFK, Jr. said in his statement, “She left this life on her own terms.” Hmmmm . . .
Well, to request it would be to put her funeral in the Catholic Church in jeopardy. But, I guess the Kennedys have always been able to do anything they wanted.
So sad, the timing looks to have cost the government 55% of her fortune. While we won’t speak evil of the dead, we must also put this in the perspective of their belief system.
May God console her family in this time of sorrow.
