Don Cherry rips ‘left-wing pinkos’ at council inaugural (Canadian Conservative Rips A Clymer Alert)

“Put that in your pipe you left-wing kooks,” hockey commentator Don Cherry told a shocked inaugural meeting of the new city council, blasting “left-wing pinkos.”

Cherry was Mayor Rob Ford’s pick for a “special guest” for the pomp-filled ceremony. Cherry turned up in a pink-and-white silk jacket and patterned tie that was eye-popping even for the famously flamboyant TV star.

The co-host of Hockey Night in Canada’s Coach’s Corner put the chain of office around Ford’s neck — something normally done by the city clerk — and then sat stoically, clapping as each of the 44 councillors got their ceremonial oaths of offices and posed for photos with Ford.

While Cherry is famously outspoken few, it seemed, were ready for the three-minute blast he delivered after being asked to make some remarks.

“I’m wearing pinko for all the pinkos out there that ride bicycles and everything, I thought I’d get it in,” Cherry said to a sharp intake of breath, then laughs and some claps.

Don Cherry is the ONLY conservative who can get away with wearing pink. He ripped the Lefties on the Toronto City Council a new clymer! What a guy... conservative and pro-American in Canada!

I love watching him. What a character. Makes Hockey night more fun when channel 9 is on.

He was a guest of new mayor Rob Ford, a conservative. He gets as good as he gets and he was tired of leftist attacks on him so he decided to show up in a pink suit. It works well on him.

This is classic Don Cherry:

“Well, what can I tell you?,” he said of those criticizing his speech. “Don’t invite me. You don’t invite a pit bull. If you want a pit bull, you get a pit bull.”

He’s a conservative pit bull who eats puppies and liberals for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Well maybe not the puppies. But you get the point!

God Bless Don Cherry! If I remember, I tune into Hockey Night in Canada just to watch him! I used to love Don Cherry’s Grapevine, eh! He had a very moving commentary right after the 9-11 attack.

Like this - the best highlights of his speech:

“This is what you’ll be facing, Rob, with these left-wing pinkos — they scrape the bottom of the barrel.”

Cherry said Ford is “honest, he’s truthful, he’s like Julian Fantino — what you see is what you get,” he said, referring to the former OPP commissioner who recently won a federal by-election in Vaughan for the Conservatives.

He said he could tell the councillors, their invited guests — including some children — and city staff about “all the millions and millions and thousands of dollars,” Ford would save as mayor.

But he instead told the story, highlighted last week by city ombudsman Fiona Crean, of city staff cutting down a tree on the property of a 75-year-old Alzheimer’s patient for no good reason and stonewalling her son after the woman was given a $4,800 bill.

“Rob’s in the mayor’s office one day — an apology comes and a $5,000 cheque and that’s why I say he’s going to be the greatest mayor this city has ever seen,” Cherry said.

“As far as I’m concerned you can put that in your pipe you left-wing kooks.”

Now that’s really saying it as only Don knows how to say it!

Hehehehee ... Don Cherry was always an ummmm 'colorful' character :)

One of my favorite books is George Plimpton's "Open Net" in which Plimpton trains with the Boston Bruins in 1977, of which Cherry was coaching at the time. Cherry offers many many 'colorful' stories about his hockey career, such as when he was playing minor league under coach Eddie Shore .. Shore would sarcastically refer to him as - "Mister Cherry, the Madagascar Kid" - of which Cherry had no clue what that meant, and Shore wasn't the kinda guy you would dare to question ....

Good to know that Don Cherry is on our side ...

Here is a true story.

In the 1970s, Cherry was a minor league hockey coach. I was at a minor league game sitting behind the visitor bench. A old man in the row slapped Cherry on the head after the home team scored a goal. A player threw a water bottle at the man and the bottle bounced off and landed in my lap. Cherry was coming up over the glass to get at the man, and I looked up, saw, and then squirted Cherry in the face with the water bottle. Cherry retreated, and several players looked real mean at me, but you could tell they were about to burst out laughing.

A couple years later, after was Washington Caps game, my friend and I were at the hotel were the Boston Bruins were staying in DC. We were on an elevator and the doors opened. Don Cherry, Harry Sinden and Phil Esposito get on. Espo was wearing a full length mink coat. My friend says, “Hey coach, remember that time in Richmond and that guy sprayed you in the face with water?”

“Yeah?”

“Well, this is the guy,” pointing at me. Sinden and Esposito start looking at me and back at Cherry. I almost fainted.

Cherry is looking real angry. Then he says, “Yeah, that was pretty funny.” The doors open and they get off.

Doors close and my friend and I laugh our a**es off.

With the onset of winter and after a lull in November it suddenly hit Southern Ontario. More than a Don Cherry to cope with. We in the more northerly climes seem to have got away with it so far. Our across the river neigbour looking good too. We did get two days of the heavy stuff though.

I extend a hand to our coffee latte drinking metrosexuals in Toronto. After all when the Caribbana Festival ran out of money, the Toronto City Council voted 57-0 to put up half a million dollars without restrictions. It only takes place on one day of the year. The one guy who asked for an audit report on how people spent that money, was called a racist. He quickly shut his mouth and voted yes.

Come on guys, we all need a good laugh. Get off yer high horse and laugh with Don Cherry. Life goes on!
