Using google earth to measure distance these missles cannot reach the US. The closest point between Venezuela and the very south tip of Florida is about 1850 km.

They could hit Puerto Rico though.

If deployed, these missiles do threaten US interests in the Caribbean. The Panama canal, Mexican and US oil fields in the Gulf of Mexico, and various US military bases (Guantanamo?) come to mind. Refer to wikileaks for a list of other potential targets. Besides that, how do we know that a future upgrade won't boost their range to include CONUS? This is a big security issue.

See the Wikipedia entry on the Shahab 3 - one variant has a range of 1930 km, which is 1200 miles. So they could hit us.

This just became a Class A crisis.

Sorry for no link, but I am on my phone

Caracas to Miami 2272 km - they could just barely make it.

More likely to hit Key West.

Technology always advances.

Just because today they won’t reach, remember Iran, and presumably Venezuela are in league with North Korea.

North Korea most certainly has missiles which will go that far.

Once the base is operational, it’s only a matter of switching up to a longer range model.

Or one, with a different warhead...

Not to turn this into a Bush-bashing, but I still can’t understand why Bush didn’t seem to think Chavez was a problem.

It’s been clear all along, he is, and will be. Yet so many in positions which should have been doing things about that.

Seemed deliberately oblivious to the threat.

Just like they do about an ever-richer, ever more capable Red China.

Just as they do about sending all our jobs and factories elsewhere.

There seems a complete disconnect between our leaders, and our nation’s interests.

They could if launched from a oil tanker in international waters.

Think outta the box.

Yea, you have to wonder, maybe it’s a slow news day in Germany?
