Update on Internet content stealing [LVRJ/Righthaven caught doing same thing as Drudge]
Las Vegas Review Journal | Dec 10, 2010 | Posted by Sherman Frederick, Champion of copyright troll, Righthaven

http://www.lvrj.com/blogs/sherm/Update_on_Internet_content_stealing.html?ref=049

Fair use quotes:

"How dare newspapers try to protect their unique content. It is ours to use for free."

Or, at least that's how I read this "report" from Mike Masnick of "TechDirt".

The writer concludes: "Still, all this is doing is making me wonder why anyone would ever want to use any Righthaven connected publication as a source ever again."

If when he says "use" he means "use without permission", then I agree with him.

End Sherman Frederick quotes.

In the meantime, Sherman Frederick posts copyrighted material to his own blog hosted by the Las Vegas Review Journal:

http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20101210/02455612230/copyright-troll-righthavens-number-one-supporter-caught-putting-infringing-material-his-own-blog.shtml

How is this any different than what Frederick/Righthaven are suing Matt Drudge for?

Because it’s really not WHAT you are doing, it’s WHO you are.

Jim, your thoughts on them now taking on Drudge?

They don’t stand a chance. They screwed up big time suing DU for using fair use excerpts and now suing Drudge over something they do themselves. This will be the end of Righthaven/Las Vegas Review Journal’s copyright trolling partnership.

They’re screwing themselves out of advertising revenue, particularly PPI. Much of the traffic to these news sites comes from blogs where the first paragraph is posted and readers go to the original site to read the article. Each page view is worth money.

I wonder if there ever was a case of Las Vegas Review quoting Drudge without his permission.

I wouldn’t be surprised if that was the case.

Of course, if one changes a couple of words here and there and then
runs it through a blog, it’s ALL GOOD. For nothing.

Seriously, I’m glad to see these Righthaven guys fail.

They suck on multiple levels.

Jim, are you still being sued by them or did they drop that? Thanks for any information.

We couldn’t afford a protracted legal fight so we were forced to settle.

Was there anything to some claim that they didn’t have the right to collect “fees” to represent a “client” on some technicality? I am curious because we have a litigious lawyer here (Jason K Singleton) using trolls to squeeze money from Mom and Pop business for ADA “noncompliance”

The objective is to bankrupt the recipient of their lawsuits. If they have a deep pocket backer they can go after anyone and tie them up in court. Drudge will have to expend money on lawyers defending himself. If we had a loser pays legal system it would not be an issue, but we don’t and the left uses it to their advantage. It doesn’t work from our side because most judges are leftists and they own the judicial system.

We raised some extra last quarter to help pay for it and hope to raise the rest next quarter. I think we’ll be fine. Thanks

What this guy is doing is a felony.

What Julian Assange is doing is protected under the 1st Amendment.

Any questions?
