Kissinger was like a walking, talking textbook of arcane about diplomacy, interests of nations, great power politics, and so on. Nixon was an emotional wreck whipped every way but Sunday ~ so it was a good mix.

Not that Kissinger was all that brutal a guy, but he clearly thought of national interests as overwhelmingly pre-eminent, and that individual interests were only of secondary concern to be dealt with at leisure later on ~ like when there was leisure.

You've got to learn to take these guys as they come and examine them within the context of their time.

Yes, it's that same snotty "we're proud to be on the enemies list" crowd that sees Palin and her family as hopelessly gauche, and not worthy of the Beltway.
