After almost 100 years, the State Compensation Insurance Fund is pulling 755 of its 830 jobs out of town, having determined that San Francisco is just too expensive - and its workforce too dumb - for the agency to continue doing most of its business here.
Workers called to a recent meeting at the Herbst Theatre were told that 293 jobs will move to Pleasanton, 422 to Vacaville and 40 to Sacramento, with 75 employees remaining in the city.
"It's part of a whole geographic strategy to reduce our footprint in high-cost areas like San Francisco," said agency spokeswoman Jennifer Vargen.
Vargen estimated that about half the workers now live either in the city, Daly City or the South Bay.

What about issues of celebrating diversity? What kind of message does it send that a major state agency is pulling out of San Francisco?????
The management for the agency will stay in SF, they pull in 6 digits easily.. and they wonder why this state is kaputt.
Don’t these people know that Diversity is the national religion? How dare they move to less diverse smaller towns?
It’s really not fair that SF is home to so many liberals. The wife and I went there in mid-Sept. It was 95 degrees in Atlanta, and the high temps in SF were in the mid to upper 60s. Add in the scenery and the great dining, and it would be a great place to live (assuming you could afford it) if the libs would just pack up and head to Canada.
Give me the 95. I lived in Monterey for a year and the winter months sucked. They can keep that cold, clammy fog that’s non-stop. Not to mention all that ocean that’s too cold to swim in year-round.
Wifey hails from Minnesota, but has always said the coldest she ever felt was in San Francisco.
Does this mean that dumb comes with diversity.
The worst part for me was that some days start out quite warm and then you freeze your rear off when that fog come rolling in over the hills.
The bad news is that existing workers will need a much longer commute to get to work.
The good news is they can get toys with their Happy Meals, now.
She has lots of company.
"The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco"" - Mark Twain
Although I am originally from San Francisco, I have been gone 45 years, now, and probably wouldn't survive; but there are things there now, much worse than the weather.
A distinct possibility.
It depends, I suppose on whether its positive diversity or negative diversity.
lol.. a silver lining I guess,, if Moochelle doesn’t sue Mickey D’s before the moves are complete
From the article, the State Compensation Insurance Fund’s president, Tom Rowe, earned $630,000 this year in salary and other pay perks.
