When is twins too many?

Like so many other couples these days, the Toronto-area business executive and her husband put off having children for years as they built successful careers. Both parents were in their 40s — and their first son just over a year old — when this spring the woman became pregnant a second time. Seven weeks in, an ultrasound revealed the Burlington, Ont., resident was carrying twins. “It came as a complete shock,” said the mother, who asked not to be named. “We’re both career people. If we were going to have three children two years apart, someone else was going to be raising our kids. ... All of a sudden our lives as we know them and as we like to lead them, are not going to happen.”

She soon discovered another option: Doctors could “reduce” the pregnancy from twins to a singleton through a little-known procedure that eliminates selected fetuses — and has become increasingly common in the past two decades amid a boom in the number of multiple pregnancies.

Selective reductions are typically carried out for women pregnant with triplets or greater, where the risk of harm or death climbs sharply with each additional fetus. The Ontario couple is part of what some experts say is a growing demand for reducing twins to one, fuelled more by socio-economic imperatives than medical need, and raising vexing new ethical questions.

Experts question whether parents should choose to terminate a fetus just because of the impact the child would have on their lives, and note that even more medically necessary reductions can trigger lifelong angst and even threaten marriages.

The mother said the Toronto doctor who eventually did her reduction performs several a month.

My wife and I were young, but we had issues getting pregnant.

We had 1 child (after 2 years of trying) and were having trouble getting pregnant again using our original fertility doctor. He wanted to do things I wanted to avoid.

The day after the 2006 midterm elections we had our first date with the new doctor.

I will never forget this.

We had never met him before. CNN was on in the waiting room gloating about Donald Rumsfeld resigning. I was annoyed.

Then, we go in his office and he is acting like a little girl in “The Sound of Music”. “Isn’t this a great day for America? That terrorist isn’t in our government anymore.”

I muddle through the conversation trying not to react. I don’t want to “ruin our chances to get pregnant” or anything.

So they guy is Mr. Cocky Wannabe. He says “I know your issues. Here is my plan. We’ll give you enough drugs to produce 10 eggs per cycle and see what happens naturally. If nothing happens there, we’ll harvest them, fertilize them, and implant them.”

I’m not a typical pro-life profile. I’m not religious. I just think killing for convenience is wrong. The idea of creating life just to kill it really pisses me off.

I ask this doctor, “what happens if we have 5 embryos?” He says “we’ll deal with them.”

WE? Does that mean he’ll help change diapers, feed them, raise them, and pay for college?

I ask a little more diplomatically for the wife’s sake.

“We will reduce the pregnancy.”

WE? Reduce? Really?

I asked, “you mean you’ll abort the embryos?”

Wife is looking at me in a “don’t do this” way. The “Sound of Music” in the doctor’s head stops. He looks at me.

“If you won’t abort embryos you are at the wrong fertility clinic.”

Yes. I was.

And I have my second child, thank you Dr. Murder. I have to wonder how many embryos Dr. Murder killed compared to the number of people killed by our armed forces during Rumsfeld’s watch. I bet they aren’t that far off.

Then there is me, who would have given almost anything to be able to have children, and monsters like THESE are the ones who get them..
Life is so unfair sometimes, you know?

“The other youngin’ knows.”

That is the truth! Twins that have lost one another due to death say they always feel like part of them selves have died. Even Elvis Presley, who was a Twin! Missed his twin till his death!

I wonder how many kids, on finding out they are the surviving child of an aborted sibling, want nothing more to do with their parents. I would think it would be horrifying to know that your mother would have killed you without any conscience whatsoever, and that the only thing that saved you is timing. Or, in this case, position in the womb.

This strikes home in a gut-wrenching way. In my late 30’s, having had our first child barely a year old, we found out we were about to have twins. Dumb us, we thought it was a blessing!

My doctor strongly recommended against even amniocentesis because of the potential harm to one or both of the babies. So we had two beautiful bouncing baby boys to join their baby sister.

Was it easy? NO. Hell, no! But I cannot imagine having ‘reduced’ that pregnancy or not having both of these fine young men with us today. I really feel sorry for the featured couple and others whose thinking is similar to theirs.

That's all it takes, which makes you the exact pro-life profile. Be proud of it - and by the way, I like your story!
