The Tax Deal Is Nothing Short Of Ronald Reagan's Notorious "Starve The Beast" Strategy

Robert Reich | Dec. 16, 2010, 2:46 PM | 1,659 | comment 50

More than thirty years ago, Ronald Reagan came to Washington intent on reducing taxes on the wealthy and shrinking every aspect of government except defense.

The new tax deal embodies the essence of Reaganomics.

It will not stimulate the economy.

A disproportionate share of the $858 billion deal will go to people in the top 1 percent who spend only a fraction of what they earn and save the rest. Their savings are sent around the world to wherever they will earn the highest return.

The only practical effect of adding $858 billion to the deficit will be to put more pressure on Democrats to reduce non-defense spending of all sorts, including Social Security and Medicare, as well as education and infrastructure.

Rush has never been as good on radio as when he had the constant parodies of Jocelyn Elders and Robert B. Reicccccccccchhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

The munchkin never met a wealth redistribution scheme that he did not love!

The problem with our economy is that we have been spending too much and saving(investing) too little. The rich don’t put the money in their mattress..they invest it in business’s of their own, or stocks or wow..govt bonds. Promoting only a consumer economy sends the money to china and the goods to a landfill.
Reagan didn’t reduce taxes..reformed taxes. For the three years before Reagan tax reform..I paid zero income tax on a 100k tax return. My depreciation offset my income. After tax reform, I lost those deductions and started paying taxes. We need to do the same thing again. Reduce rates and reduce deductions..move to a flat tax..

Yeah. He was comic genius during the early Clinton administration. I really miss that stuff on his show!

Anyone know where you can find a collection of Jocelyn Elder updates online from back in the 90’s?

I’m not sure whether Reich got the title “his shortness” from his physical stature or his intellect. He has always been a stupid hack. Who takes anything he says seriously?

“The Tax Deal Is Nothing Short Of Ronald Reagan’s Notorious ‘Starve The Beast’ Strategy”

Pffft. We wish.

“It will not stimulate the economy.”

Well no, they won’t, because they’re not cuts. They stimulated the economy back when they were instituted, and kept it stimulated until, ironically, a stimulus bill was passed at the tail end of the Bush presidency. (Fake) stimulus destroyed (real) stimulus.

“A disproportionate share of the $858 billion deal will go to people in the top 1 percent who spend only a fraction of what they earn and save the rest.”

What country does this bastard live in? Where do the top 1 percent “save” their money? In mattresses? In mason jars in their backyards? What (proportionally) little money they “save” gets put back into the economy via banks, where it is available for others to use. The rest is usually rolled directly back into the economy through growing the enterprises that got the 1 percenters wealthy in the first place.

“Their savings are sent around the world to wherever they will earn the highest return.”

They wouldn’t have to send it anywhere else if the government would get the hell out of their way. As it is, the regulations and tax burdens have made it cheaper to ship goods all the way across the Pacific than to simply manufacturing them here. And that’s ridiculous.

Reich is a retarded runt.
