Arctic ice melt may promote cross-breeding, further imperiling endangered animals

As the world heats up and polar ice melts, different types of bears, whales and seals could meet and mate — but these unions may be far from happy, researchers said Wednesday........

At least 22 species are at risk of hybridizing in 34 different combinations, according to a team led by Brendan Kelly, an Alaska-based evolutionary biologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The pairings include polar bears and grizzlies, narwhals and beluga whales, and various assortments of seals. Some of those species are listed as endangered or threatened.

Kelly said the report "is sort of a call-to-arms to encourage our colleagues around the Arctic to recognize this may be going on." The authors urged the scientific community to begin monitoring mammals living in the Arctic to check for any increase in hybridization events.

Kelly and his coauthors reached their conclusions after reviewing the scientific literature, scouring museums for possible hybrid bones and pinpointing which populations are at risk of running into each other as the Arctic ice shrinks......

Although Arctic species rarely interbreed, many are capable of doing so. In 2006, a bear with a patchy white-and-brown coat was shot in the Canadian Arctic. Scientists suspected — and DNA-typing later confirmed — that the animal was a polar-grizzly hybrid, a creature known variously as a "pizzly" or "grolar bear."

..... Negative effects may be more subtle too, said Fred Allendorf, a conservation geneticist at the University of Montana who was not involved in the study. Birth cycles may not match up with those scarce months when food is available. Animals may head in the wrong direction during migration periods. And it's not clear that hybrids would be hardy enough to handle certain environmental shocks or diseases.

Ever heard of a Grolar? How about a Pizzly? Actually they are the same animal; a cross between a polar bear and a brown grizzly. Two are currently being studied at Osnabruck Zoo in Germany after an accidental mating between a female brown bear and a male polar bear which were in the same enclosure. Source

Climate change appears to be igniting a sexual revolution among Arctic mammals -- and that’s not good news for some endangered species. Source

Celebrate diversity!

[and the “Grolar” is way cooler looking than either of its parents]

The liberals want gays to be out and overt in our military. So who are they to restrict these animal’s sex partners. Gay sex is natural to them but not this?

I am sure this “problem” is minor. The global climate “researchers” eat up tax money faster than welfare recipients

Look for the AGW kooks to go full bore now, as data will start to show an end to the warming cycle, maybe even a little ice age, as the one that followed the Medieval Warm Period.
These AGW thugs are like thieves caught in the sunrise.
They will pull out all the stops to get their agenda accepted
before they are frozen out.

Look who NASA just put in charge of science.

December 13, 2010: NASA Names Waleed Abdalati As Agency's New Chief Scientist "WASHINGTON -- NASA Administrator Charles Bolden has named Waleed Abdalati the agency's chief scientist, effective Jan. 3. Abdalati will serve as the principal adviser to the NASA administrator on agency science programs, strategic planning and the evaluation of related investments.

Abdalati is currently the director of the Earth Science and Observation Center at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He also is an associate professor in the university's geography department. Between 1998 and 2008, Abdalati held various positions at NASA in the areas of scientific research, program management and scientific management. His research has focused on the study of polar ice cover using satellite and airborne instruments. He has led or participated in nine field and airborne campaigns in the Arctic and the Antarctic.

Abdalati will represent all of the scientific endeavors in the agency, ensuring they are aligned with and fulfill the administration's science objectives. He will advocate for NASA science in the context of those broader government science agendas and work closely with the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and the Office of Management and Budget......"

Seems to me, that whenever nanny government (anthropogenic global warming) gets involved, they screw things up.

Experts have overturned decades of advice by urging people to go out in the midday sun without sunblock – because the dangers of missing out on Vitamin D can outweigh the risk of cancer.

After years of ordering us to cover up to avoid skin cancer, a leading group of charities are now telling us to go out in the midday sun unprotected – at least for the first few minutes.

The change of heart comes as it emerges a large proportion of Britons are at risk from vitamin D deficiency which can lead to a host of health problems.

Paranoia about sun exposure has become so great among some parents that doctors are even seeing a return of rickets in children – the bone disease that it was thought died out 80 years ago.

The "definitive statement" by seven leading health groups and charities, including Cancer Research UK, the National Osteoporosis Society and Multiple Sclerosis Society, is designed to clarify conflicting messages.

It concluded that surrendering your body to the sun for 10 minutes should take place at midday during the summer months because that is when the sun is strong enough to trigger the body into making vitamin D. ....."

“Experts have overturned decades of advice by urging people to go out in the midday sun without sunblock – because the dangers of missing out on Vitamin D can outweigh the risk of cancer.”

As a kid, I was quite prone to burning, but it did not get in the way with summer activities in the south, and we took it as a natural part of growing up.
I am now in the Philippines and in the last two years I have been only one day in long pants, and around my neighborhood I never wear a shirt except when I bicycle into the heart of town. I then throw on a Tshirt.
I have had only one or two sunburns in two years, and that was with groups on all day beach parties.
Obviously, I have no shortage of vitamin D.

“Academically, we are obviously all morally opposed to incest and rightfully so,” Galluzzo said. “At the same time, there is an argument to be made in the Swiss case to let go what goes on privately in bedrooms.”

“It’s OK for homosexuals to do whatever they want in their own home,” he said. “How is this so different? We have to figure out why some behavior is tolerated and some is not.”

Galluzzo also said that even though Epstein’s daughter had emerged as a victim in the case, she could “be best described as an accomplice.” The Huffington Post has Epstein’s lawyer, Matthew Galluzzo, making the stupid and disgusting case that incest is somehow similar to gay sex:
