Israel wants F-35s despite snubbing Obama

Despite torpedoing U.S. President Barack Obama's Middle East peace drive, Israel is still trying to sweet-talk Washington into providing 20 F-35 stealth fighters it promised free of charge in return for a settlements freeze in the occupied West Bank.

Washington withdrew the offer after the government of Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, dominated by right-wing parties, refused to extend a 10-month halt in settlement building for 90 days, the Palestinian condition for continuing the talks.

In the face of Israel's refusal, the U.S. administration withdrew the offer of free F-35s worth $3 billion, along with other incentives it had put on the table.

But Israeli officials say Netanyahu's government is still trying to work out a deal to get the 20 radar-evading, fifth-generation fighters that are built by Lockheed Martin.

They take what they can get and make the most out of it. Obama could buy the air in the tires with the taxes from my estate if I die next year.

You would think that the Israelis, being as ingenious as they tend to be, would have developed and manufactured an aircraft far superior to anything they could purchase.

What and pay retail like a schmuck? I would do just what they are doing, like up for the proven product. I don’t think even Obama can mess up the fact our aircraft are the envy of the world. I support a strong Israel, especially when they can’t trust our POTUS anymore than we can.

In the F-35I, they will be incorporating their own technology into the F-35. This includes a 600 gallon tanks and missiles

I don’t see whats so great about an airframe. You can put state of the art engines, weapons, navigations, radar, etc on any airframe and make it pretty darn good.

They want to buy from America even though they a homegrown industry. The same goes for South Korea, and Taiwan Japan. They buy the package and they enhance it themselves and they have homegrown industries. They know America makes the best planes anywhere in the world.

Why buy when you can produce? I think I’m thinking to much into this whole thing. Sorry.

It could be a number of things like arms treaties, or they lack certain resources

Well, I think you’ll find that this is something coming from the labor wing of the Israeli government and unlikely to be pushed by Bibi. Not to mention unlikely to be endorsed by the “palestinians”. Just another timeburner.

If I was Israel, I would go with one of two options for future planes:

1. The Japanese/SK 6th generation program.

2. A “cheap” european fighter and add their own active stealth.

Of course, there’s a third option as well - the Indian/Russian way.

No, the Israeli appetite for F-35 is great. They have their plans for the jet

Israel is not in the fighter-producing business because they had a program, it was in cooperation with the US, and the US shut it down.

You can still find the rabid foaming over the Lavi on every nazist site on earth. As well as a good chunk of heil-screaming verbiage right here on FR.

They must lack the very expensive infrastructure required to build high tech fighter jets. Such as exotic metal alloys, very high tech computer controlled machining centers, sophisticated testing facilities for aerodynamics and structural strength of various aircraft components, vast amount of engineers and numerical control programmers etc.

Only large countries such as USA, Russia, China, India etc can dedicate so many monetary and human resource skills.

I don’t see whats so great about an airframe.

Which is but one of the many reasons why you aren't working at the Skunk Works.

They may like the plane, but the US is no longer a viable ally for anyone. Except for the likes of Ahmadinejad, Chavez and Assad.

Might as well stuff an unsecured hand grenade in your back pocket.

Despite torpedoing U.S. President Barack Obama's Middle East peace drive,

What frickin' peace drive, do they mean the one where Bozo wants Israel to turn over most of their country to the muslims, that peace drive?
