If you do a traceroute (bring up a command prompt, type “traceroute blahblah.com”) you’ll see all the nodes that were hopped to get to the address. You may notice that the names of several of the first nodes seem to belong to your ISP (such as having “rr.com” at the end for RoadRunner) as your traffic travels along its network. Then you’ll start seeing other networks. IP address geolocating can often only get as close to you as that final node of your ISP before it hits the larger Internet. Your ISP can at times switch routing on you so that you come up on the larger Internet in a different location.

It’s fun to do this on overseas military networks because after 20 or so hops you show up on some government network in the US, and that’s where the web sites think you are.

Sorry, typing too fast, the command is “tracert”.

Unfunded mandate. Storage and retention cost money and logging levels are controlled with that in mind. "You have to keep everything forever in case we might need it" inevitably pushes the cost of it to the customer or to the taxpayer if the government decides to be "generous" and help the ISP's pay for it with taxpayer money. This is before we even consider any privacy concerns.

Somewhere in a cave - literally - there are rows of magnetic tapes that I helped write years ago containing data that is undoubtedly 99% useless, "just in case" there should be a patent or intellectual property challenge on the 1% that isn't. It's costing the company that owns it five figures a year. And they can't touch it to prune it, either, lest it be "tainted." And the cost of somebody else's medication is just that tiny bit higher because of it. Nothing in this arena is free.

Thanks for pinging me to your good comment above Seadog. I just happened to notice your added comment below and it struck a nerve with me.

[“soulution” = solution ]

Solutions today often lack ‘soul’, don’t they !

Actually just an accident/typo... typing too fast, I guess, and didn’t check it closely afterward. (No subliminal message intended.)

...But, based upon your thoughtful comment at #64, maybe I ought to change it back. ...LOL.

It did send an immediate ‘not so subliminal’ message to me when I read it, lol. I liked it!

Sorry I’ve missed so many pings lately. I’m off and on, here and gone, lol.

Maybe I'll grab THAT for my new tagline. Probably a pretty good fit for me too. :))

Lol, ‘off and on, here and gone’. It does rhyme too. Would be a good tagline.

I'm heading off, nice seeing you Seadog.
