Politics: Rahm Emanuel thought he was above the law, but an Illinois court says he can't run for mayor of a city he doesn't live in. At least he can vote for someone else.
It's been said that through redistricting and gerrymandering we no longer live in an era where voters choose their leaders, but one in which leaders choose their voters. Sometimes you can even pick the state you want to be senator from, as Secretary of State Hillary Clinton did in New York.
At least she and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, made an effort to meet New York state's residency requirements, buying a home there and living in it. The same cannot be said of their former protege, Rahm Emanuel.
When Emanuel went back to Washington, this time to be President Obama's chief of staff, he leased his Chicago residence. When the mayoral vacancy occurred with Richard Daley announcing his return, Emanuel tried to get his tenant to leave.
The tenant refused, and Emanuel was left without a valid Chicago residence as defined by a Chicago election code that says you must be a resident for a year prior to any election. No problem, said Rahm. He claimed he was saved by a public service exemption for his service to the president and that his heart, if not his luggage, had never left the Windy City.

If this decision stands, then we can say that there is still a tiny bit of justice — even in Chicago. And won’t it be fun to see what kind of incompetent ends up as their mayor?
It dawned on me yesterday that Mayor Daley, the supposed savior and benefactor of Chicago, is to blame for some of this. He just suddenly a few months ago decided to walk away from being Mayor, with no heir apparent and no successor trained. Despite all his supposed caring for the city of Chicago, is going to leave it in a huge financial mess and leadership vacuum that it likely won’t recover from.
“...is going to leave it in a huge financial mess...”
Big deal, it’s no different than the rest of America. Taxes will just keep going up on a local, state and federal level. There is still plenty of money to take from the “rich”. In the end, the Feds will end up paying for it no matter what the spineless Congressmen say.
Have no fear, now that the Chicago Mafia is clear to take over the New York territory, Rahm will get a goooooood job!
I thought he was back on the ballot.
From what I understand, not back on the ballot (yet). They issued a stay preventing ballots being printed without Rahm's name on them until his appeal is either accepted or rejected.
I assume that the appeal will have to be heard quickly - but who knows about Illinois.
Oh. I hope he’s off for good.
