The difference between Eastern European societies and ours is the dominance of the liberal media. That’s how Marxian ideology has penetrated two layers deeper here than in Serbia, et al. Even though they lived under Soviet-style despotism, the apparatus for brainwashing was primitive compared to our MSM.
Actually, that is part of it, but I am not sure that this was completely it.
I think that it may have been more that under communism they expected to be fed propaganda from their media -- and they regarded our Western media as "free" (Radio Free Europe) when they could get access to it.
We on the other hand have lived under the expectation that our media and educational system was "free, fair and balanced" for so many years that we never developed the defenses that those living under communism had -- until perhaps now. Further, where do we go to get our equivalent of "Radio free Europe"? Nowhere -- the internet -- some of which is so polarizing and out there, no one knows what to believe. I don't even trust Fox much more than I trust MSNBC, because everyone's got an angle and ownership by a Saudi prince doesn't exactly make me feel comfy & relaxed.
