China faces great pressure in securing its food supply in the next five years due to accelerating domestic demand, a senior official was quoted as saying in local media on Saturday.
Chen Xiaohua, a vice agricultural minister, said he expected China's consumption of grains to grow by 4 billion kgs a year between 2011 to 2015.
Consumption of vegetable oil will grow by 800,000 tonnes a year over that period, while meat demand will rise by 1 million tonnes annually.
"Our country is facing great pressure in the supply of agricultural products," the Shanghai Securities News quoted Chen as saying at an agricultural meeting.
To meet increasing demand, Chen said the government would try to boost food supply through policy measures including higher investment spending and subsidies for farming activities.

On a more serious note, China will probably use this as an excuse to raise its presence around the world...especially in countries that have excess food capacity. At any rate, it sounds like inflation in the global food market won't be going away any time soon.
Of course they have food problems every time I eat Chinese food an hour later I am hungry again
Truth be told, this is man made shortages of food instituted by unjust governments.
Did someone say Tiananmen massacre? I mean.. high inflation in Red China and its role in the events leading to the Tiananmen massacre.
Did the students pine for democracy and their very own Statue of Liberty? or was it something more mundane like today's events; to wit, high inflation and corruption as far as the eye can see?
Truth be told, this is man made shortages of food instituted by unjust governments...
Absolute truth.
Oh, well a couple of well placed, nuclear terrorists bombs will reduce the demand.
Sounds like a good opportunity for the U.S. to sell some wheat and whittle down our debt to China. Of course we won’t be able to help them with their corn oil problem. We’re using all of our corn to make ethanol. And subsidizing it at that.
Good news! Food is power and we can produce almost enough food to feed the entire world.....as soon as we GET RID OF OBAMA!
Maybe we can trade out of our debt with china. Charge them $20 for an ear of corn!!!!
And here we are using ours for ethanol that has to government subsidised to make a profit. What a waste.
You, too? Wonder why that is? :-)
Easy answer. Trying to use those damn chop sticks you drop most of your food and burn up more calories than you consume so you must try again very soon.
As for China, the answer to their food problem is simple also.
Go Green! Turn all your food supply into ethanol to lessen your dependence on foreign oil. Use only green electricity generated from wind and solar power. Otherwise you will create Green House Gases, especially CO2, and you know what that means. Yep, warmer climate and lots of CO2, which equals what? More plant life and food. So, problem solved.
In addition with limited electricity your economy will tank and there will be less need for strong workers. They can then return to the farm and do what? Produce more food.
Although this is a parody of the Left you can see how stupid and contradictory their policies are. However, their stupid and contradictory policies are never intended for the rest of the world, only us.
Farmers in the USA should make a lot of money.
Let’s hope so - they deserve it.
Look for more tainted food as chinese suppliers add “extenders” to food products.
No, we're not. The US exports billions of bushels.
STOP IT!!!!
Don't you know that we are china's slaves and can never ever ever ever ever come back! Just might as well learn Chinese and get Mao's little red book! The United States is over, we can't compete with anything! The Chinese with there enlightened despots beat us at absolutely everything! We should adopt China's model because its working so well for them!
If the Chinese offer enough money for the corn oil, the ethanol plants will go betting.
