GHWB replied that he was the incumbent and thought he would win anyway -- until just before the election when his poll numbers were dreadful. I'm talking about actually analysis of the numbers from the 1992 and 1996 elections, extrapolating things like turnout and the way "coming back home" votes would have gone, etc.
Bush's personal opinions, and even his energy on the campaign field, don't really matter for that.
